In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players may want to acquire the Spellbreaker Shield, which is the Daedric Artifact of Peryite, the Lord of Pestilencean. It is an effective item in a battle against dragons who exhale fire or ice. The Dwarven shield has an inventory weight of 12, armor level 79, and while blocking, it will create a ward to protect the player from spells up to 50 points. Players will need to complete the Daedric quest 'The Only Cure' to obtain the shield. Additionally, the Spellbreaker Shield will count toward the achievement 'Oblivion Walker.'

To complete 'The Only Cure' quest, players must be at least level 12. As one of the series of Daedric quests in Skyrim, players should begin at the Shrine to Peryite, Northwest of Markarth, and interact with Kesh the Clean. The NPC will request that players bring him Silver Ingot, Flawless Ruby, Deathbell Flower, and Vampire Dust.

Players will find the Silver Ingot from a blacksmith vendor. Both Flawless Ruby and Deathbell Flower can be purchased from an alchemist vendor. Alternatively, Deathbell Flowers can be obtained by delivering Farengar's Frost Salts to Arcadia in Whiterun. Flawless Ruby can also be found in a chest after players increase their odds of finding gemstones in chests by completing the 'No Stone Unturned' quest. Finally, the Vampire Dust can be purchased from an alchemist vendor or rewarded for defeating an enemy vampire in Skyrim, many of which are found at Haemar's Shame.

Unlocking The Spellbreaker Shield in Skyrim

A Dwarven Centurion in Skyrim's Dwemer ruins

To complete the quest, players should deliver the collected ingredients back to Kesh, who will prepare a potion, which the Dragonborn should inhale the fumes from. Then, Peryite will appear and request that the Dragonborn kill and replace Orchendor as Champion. Once players have received their instructions from Peryite, they should head West to Bthardamz to conquer the dungeon to face Orchendor in battle.

Orchendor is immune to spells, and the boss can teleport around the arena. Additionally, he is joined by numerous Dwemer automatons, including a difficult Centurion. The best approach for this fight is using a ranged weapon, such as a bow in Skyrim or crossbow. Because Orchendor will teleport around the arena, it is easier to land ranged attacks on him than melee attacks. Once the boss is defeated, players should loot his corpse to find the key to the Bthardamz elevator.

Once defeated, players can return to the Shrine to Peryite and active the urn to commune with the Daedric god by once again inhaling the fumes. Once his dialogue ends, players will be rewarded with the Spellbreaker Shield. The shield is one of the best in the game, with a base armor rating of 38, making it more effective than a Dragonplate Shield or a Daedric Shield. In addition to protecting the player from spells when blocking, the ward will also protect players from shouts and blocking damage.

To make the Spellbreaker Shield even more powerful, players can enhance it with spells or fortifying potions in Skyrim. Of note, the Elemental Protection Perk in the Block Skill Tree will negate nearly every Destruction Spell in the game. Even without any enhancements, the shield will still block Dragon Breath attacks and high-level Dragur Shouts.
