Not all mods are necessarily approved by the developer, but many of them are high quality and create a level of immersion or humor that the game did not initially have. Most mods are completely free, too, so they are easily accessible to everyone with some knowledge on mods. This extra content can completely change the environment and feel, whether by adding popular memes or even creating a futuristic version of Skyrim with Fort Nox.
A mod from 2017 that changes the infamously repetitive loading screen tips in Skyrim has resurfaced and become popular within Skyrim's subreddit (via TheGamer). User wtfamidoinglol420 recently posted a screenshot of their loading screen in the game while using the mod, which includes a mean comment about internet trolls as a replacement for the typical helpful hints on the in-game trolls. The tip humorously stated that these trolls are found in the "kingdoms of Reddit, 4Chan, YouTube, and Twitter," which are far from Skyrim, so there is no need to "worry about them." The mod is titled SarcasticDragon's Snarky Loading Screens, and features many other sarcastic tips and hints (and even direct hits to Bethesda), and can be downloaded on NexusMods.
Users on the Skyrim subreddit repeatedly showed their amusement in the comments on wtfamidoinglol420's post. While the sarcastic loading screens aren't necessarily adding hours of additional Skyrim content, the immersion created by comedically breaking the fourth wall is entertaining to players that could possibly be exploring the game a second, third, or even tenth time. Skyrim has been re-released multiple times with The Anniversary Edition being the latest, and the modding community plays a substantial part in the relevancy of the title since its original launch.
The decade that has passed since the launch of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim marks the longest gap between Elder Scrolls titles, but players are still largely content. From adding new quests, improving the game performance, or even introducing Thomas the Tank Engine to Skyrim, mods are beloved in the community of an open-world game that already contains hours and hours of content. While the vanilla game is a fan favorite, there are endless possibilities with Skyrim mods.
