Visually Stunning 'Skyline' Trailer Catches Your Eye

Skyline movie new images

One of the unknown films to make a big splash in San Diego a few weeks back for Comic-Con 2010 was Skyline, the non-studio, self-funded sci-fi film by special effects gurus Colin and Greg Strause.

You may not have heard of the movie and I wouldn't be surprised - it's another film about an alien invasion where massive ships descend upon Los Angeles using light to attract then swallow human beings. It's not your typical alien invasion affair and you can see why by watching the first official Skyline trailer below.

Skyline is something that takes advantage of the creativity behind special effects company the Brothers Strause created, Hydraulx, as well as their unrestricted-by-studio directorial talents, having made their first major feature with AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem. While Skyline appears like a big budget sci-fi blockbuster, the Strauses explained at Comic-Con that they were actually inspired by Paranormal Activity and the idea of shooting a movie in someone's house.

Think of any big effects-heavy movie of the last few years and it's a good chance the Brothers Strause had some hand in the visual effects design. Some recent examples of their work include Iron Man 2, Avatar, Fast & Furious, 2012, The Incredible Hulk and that's just to name a few. Their pet project, Skyline shows you yet another example of what they're capable of, even without large amounts of money:

Needless to say, Skyline looks amazing, so let's see how they tell the story and offer an entertaining experience for the audience. For now, I'm already sold. If you can't tell from the trailer, the aliens and their ships are meant to appear massive and organic, with the creatures themselves the size of Transformers.

Here's the first look image release as well which depicts the alien vessels - click to enlarge:

Skyline is written by Joshua Cordes and Liam O’Donnell and stars Donald Faison, Eric Balfour, David Zayas, Scottie Thompson and Brittany Daniel, a cast the Brothers Strause were able to assemble without the typical casting issues studios face in trying to market characters internationally.
