Mark McCorkle, one of the writers on Disney's 2005 cult hit Sky High, says that a sequel made for Disney+ could happen if fans are vocal enough. Sky High is the perfect example of a film released ahead of its time. Focusing on a group of teenage superheroes at a school for kids with superpowers, it parodies a lot of well-known superhero tropes. But it struggled at the box office as superhero movies had yet to take over the public consciousness.

Starring Kurt Russell, as Superman parody The Commander, the recently passed Kelly Preston as Wonder Woman parody Jetstream, Michael Angarano as their son, Will, and Danielle Panabaker as Layla, his love interest. It also featured horror film legend Bruce Campbell as Sonic Boom, the gym teacher at Sky High, as well as a young Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a senior that everyone is in love with, but who turns out to be supervillain Royal Pain. The movie has become a cult classic in recent years, thanks to the way it plays with and undermines superhero tropes while remaining a relatively down-to-earth teen comedy.

Despite various rumors throughout the years, a sequel has never happened. But now, McCorkle, who co-wrote the script, has told Inverse that he believes a sequel to the movie would be a "natural fit" for Disney+. He also says that if fans want it to happen, they'll have to let their voices be heard by streaming the movie and tweeting their support for the idea. If they do, he says, their wish may well be granted. You can read his comments below.

"To me, it's a very natural fit for Disney+, and over the years we always thought maybe a sequel could happen one of these days. There was always a belief that this was a rich enough world to keep going with new ideas. At least [Director] Mike [Mitchell] seems to believe it. I guess if the film still has that same affection of people watching it and streaming it on Disney+, who knows. Maybe if the people speak, their wishes will be answered."

Sky High sequel in the works

McCorkle seems to be encouraging fans of the movie to do a Snyder Cut-type campaign to get the film made. It's clear from his comments that there is little desire from Disney to make a sequel but he believes the studio could change its mind if there is enough support for the movie online.

Sky High is currently streaming on HBO Max but will return home to Disney+ from December 4, according to the streaming service's placeholder page for the movie. What McCorkle says about a potential being a "natural fit" for Disney+ makes sense. If a sequel is to be made, it will make the most sense as a mid-budget teen comedy, just like the first was. While those types of movies used to slot into a less popular release date near the end of summer in cinemas, they're more suited to streaming now, where they have time to capture an audience. Whether we will ever see a Sky High sequel, though, remains in doubt.
