Magnolia Pictures has released the first trailer for Crystal Moselle's Sundance breakout drama, Skate Kitchen. It's an appropriate day for the trailer to drop online too, seeing as it's national Go Skateboarding Day. Skate Kitchen itself is Moselle's second feature length effort as a director, following her work on the documentary The Wolfpack (which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival). The movie further reunites Moselle with several members of the real-life Skate Kitchen group after their previous collaboration on the 2016 short That One Day.

Written by Moselle, Jen Silverman (Ink), and Aslihan Ünaldi (Young Wrestlers), Skate Kitchen introduces real-life skater Rachelle Vinberg as Camille, an introverted teenager who joins the titular group: an all-girl skateboarding collective based in New York. Skate Kitchen members like Vinberg, Nina Moran, and Ajani Russell are joined by the film by Jaden Smith, who plays the mysterious skateboarder that strikes up a relationship with Camille - something that proves to be much trickier to manage than either of them had anticipated.

Joining Smith and the Skate Kitchen's members in the movie's cast are names like Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange in the New Black) and Star Wars Rebels voice actor Taylor Gray. Moselle's film starts playing in select theaters in the U.S. later this summer, a little over a week into August. Its opening weekend competition will include Jason Statham's giant shark thriller The Meg, as well as Spike Lee's new buzzed-about true story based offering, BlacKkKlansman. The red band trailer for Skate Kitchen is now online and can be viewed in the space above.

Moselle's Skate Kitchen was nominated for the Best of Next! Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered back in January. The film has been largely celebrated by critics thus far, with those who caught it at Sundance praising the movie's vibrant storytelling style and authentic take on how young women come of age, through the lens of the skateboarding world. Gauging by the early reviews and trailer, Moselle should make a name for herself with her first non-documentary feature length effort as a director.

Whether Skate Kitchen attracts a crowd outside of the usual indie film audience and Sundance movie fans is, of course, its own matter. It won't be the only Sundance hit attempting to find a larger audience in theaters this August either, what with Aneesh Chaganty's experimental thriller Searching arriving a week earlier. Box office viability aside, it's good to know there are some intriguing offerings from up and comers on the horizon to keep an eye out for, as this year's summer movie season winds down to a close.
