Since I'm a huge fan of his cult film Donnie Darko, I'm automatically looking forward to anything writer/director Richard Kelly puts out. And the upcoming Cameron Diaz, James Marsden starring thriller, The Box, is no different.
The Box stars Diaz and Marsden as a married couple in financial trouble who are one day visited by a mysterious, facially scarred stranger (Frank Langella) who makes them a strange and bold offer involving a box: if they push the button on the box they will receive a payment of one million dollars, but the catch is someone, somewhere in the world who they don't know will die.
It's a great premise that raises all sorts of moral questions (what would YOU do?), coming to us from the guy who brought us the fantastically bewildering Donnie Darko, and the totally wacky Southland Tales (I was one of the few who appreciated that film). To whet your appetite for The Box's release in less than a week, we have a whopping six new clips from the movie, courtesy of Bloody-Disgusting and MTV Movies Blog.
We'll first take a look at the one from MTV which lasts almost three minutes. If the trailers and pics so far gave off a strange vibe, it's definitely not a marketing ploy. As this clip shows, it's just as weird as you might think, with it featuring cryptic dialogue, a creepy atmosphere and a general sense of "what the hell is going on?" Check out the clip below:
Pretty creepy, huh? As /Film notes, the clip gives us hint of the feature film score debut by Win Butler, Regine Chassagne and Owen Pallett (of one of my favorite bands, Arcade Fire). I don't know about you but it sounds quite reminiscent of Jonny Greenwood's (of Radiohead) score from There Will Be Blood from a couple of years ago, only a bit more... immediate feeling. That's a good thing.
And now here's the rest of the clips from The Box, courtesy of the guys over at Bloody-Disgusting. They're not quite as long as the MTV one (well they are if you count them all as one :P ), but they do well to sell the movie for what I imagine it's supposed to be. It's hard to tell since the movie isn't out yet, but I get a feeling they could be considered by some to be mildly spoilerific, but it's hard to say at this point. Check all five of them out:
Great stuff. There's always a chance that the ads for The Box are hiding a lot of the problems with the film (as much as I liked Southland Tales, I fully admit it's a bad film - the trailer for it was fantastic), at this point I'm highly anticipating seeing it. Kelly's peculiar style and line of thinking, along with the cast (Langella as the creepy stranger is a nice touch) is reason enough for me to anticipate it.
What do you think of the latest clips from The Box? Do you think the film will turn out to be as good as it looks? Or will it be another Southland Tales?
The Box hits theaters on November 6th in the U.S., and on December 4th in the UK, both in 2009.
