Sitcoms are the staple in the world of TV shows. People always had the wish to laugh and that will probably never change. Sitcoms help them to fulfill this wish, to relax after a long day of work, of studies, or simply anytime the audience needs to just rest and clear their minds.

The rich variety of sitcoms available then assures that there's a suitable show for everyone, those who want to watch sitcoms focused primarily on female heroes included. While some of the sitcoms feature only leading female characters, some also throw men in the mix. Let's take a look at 10 sitcoms with more female main characters than males.

Fam

After she finished playing Elena Gilbert in the hit show The Vampire Diaries, actress Nina Dobrev went on to appear in multiple films and TV shows of different genres. She got to show the world her comedy chops in the last year's CBS sitcom Fam which primarily focuses on Nina Dobrev's heroine Clem, a respected and serious young woman, whose life turns upside down when her younger, unruly sister Sharon goes to live with Clem and her fiance Nick.

Even though there are multiple characters in the show, Clem and Sharon are the most important ones. The network canceled the show after just one season but it's still worth watching since it contains a lot of hilarious moments.

Fleabag

Fleabag-Season 2-Andrew Scott-Phoebe-Waller Bridge

Unlike most TV shows on this list, Fleabag isn't an American show, but a British one, which lends a certain style of humor to it not everyone might enjoy. But if you will like it, you'll be in for quite a ride. As its title suggests, the main heroine of Fleabag, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, isn't very sympathetic, at least not at first, and definitely not the type of person you'd want to have in your life.

However, that makes watching her adventures on TV even more enjoyable, in a sort of guilty-pleasure way. The heroine doesn't mince her words, she does what she wants to and can be quite a mess, especially when it comes to a relationship with other people, not just men, but also her sister included.

Haters Back Off

Another TV show which you'll either love or hate, but probably nothing in between, is Haters Back Off. It ran for two seasons, each of which has only eight episodes, so it won't take you long to watch the whole show.

It focuses on Miranda Sings, played by Colleen Ballinger, who believes she's destined to become a huge star and tries to become famous by uploading her singing videos online. Unfortunately for Miranda, she's completely talentless, and internet haters online, there's no-one in her proximity who tells her so. Maybe except her younger sister who's also the only sensible member of the family.

Miranda

Another Miranda on this list is much more lovable than Miranda Sings. This Miranda (played by Miranda Hart) stars in a sitcom about a woman, who's super awkward in social interactions, her mother desperately wants to see her married, she tends to burst out singing at the most inopportune times, and, of course, she's hopelessly in love with her neighbor Gary (Tom Ellis).

It's easy to sympathize with Miranda, especially if you ever made a fool of yourself in front of your crush, had to explain to your mother why you weren't married yet or worked a strange job with your best friend.

Shake It Up!

This list deserves at least one teenage/children sitcom, and Shake It Up! is a time-tried choice. It even works for adults, especially if they want to clear their minds and just enjoy some good songs and dance numbers.

The show stars Zendaya and Bella Thorne who were super young at the time and portrayed Rocky Blue and CeCe Jones, two best friends, and dancers who are over the moon when they get to join a TV show as backup dancers. Shake It Up! shows how difficult it can be to combine friendships, school, and dancing, but it does so in a light-hearted and relaxing way.

Younger

From one pole to another, and from a teen show to one hundred percent adult sitcom. Younger introduces the audience Lisa Miller (Sutton Foster), a forty-year-old woman who spent the last fifteen years raising her daughter and now wants to start working again in the publishing.

Unfortunately for Lisa, potential employers are looking for younger people. Lisa's best friend and roommate Maggie suggests that Lisa should pretend she's just 27, and it all goes uphill and then downhill from there. The show has recently finished its sixth season, and it's still going strong, full of hilarious moments and interesting characters, not just Lisa, but also her boss Diana Trout, played by Miriam Shor.

One Day At A Time

You might think that a show whose main heroine suffers from PTSD, anxiety, and depression couldn't possibly be funny. Well, luckily that's not the case from One Day At A Time, a Netflix sitcom, whose leading lady is an ex-military single mom.

Raising two teenagers is hard enough, even if you don't have your mom at your side, who has some clear opinions on how you should be raising your kids, and what you should be doing with your life in general. Justina Machado is excellent in the main role, and her mother played by Rita Moreno makes it so easy to love to hate her.

30 Rock

30 Rock has been around for quite some time now but it's just as good in 2020 as it was in 2006 when the TV show first premiered. In case you haven't watched it, you should know that it's about Liz Lemon (played by Tina Fey), a TV screenwriter for the TV show "The Girlie Show."

After Liz meets her new boss, she realizes that her job will never be the same again and she has to learn to navigate the changing waters, all the while making sure that her show won't stop airing, and won't change into something Liz no longer recognizes.

Designing Women

30 Rock may not be the newest sitcom on the block, but if you're in a mood for a real oldie, here's one right for you. Designing Women first premiered in 1986 and ran for seven seasons until 1993. It has 163 episodes in total so if you'll decide to watch the whole show, you'll be in for quite a while.

And what's it about? The show focuses on the Sugarbaker sisters who decide to establish a designing company together. They face a lot of challenges, both professional and personal ones, but the series never loses its humor and light spirit which makes it enjoyable even today.

The Mindy Project

Mindy Kaling proved that she had a knack for portraying funny characters more than sufficiently in the now already legendary sitcom The Office, but if you want to see her in a different role than Kelly Kapoor, then you should check out The Mindy Project which Kaling managed to push forward despite all the difficulties (like the fact that they originally didn't want her to play the leading role in a TV show she wrote).

Kaling's heroine works as a gynecologist and she's trying to sort out both her personal and her work life, which understandably doesn't go as smoothly as she would like.
