Sister Wives fans know that Ysabel Brown has needed treatment for her scoliosis. Since then, her family has taken all the precautions from special exercises to surgery in order to ensure that her back is taken care of. Ysabel, who is Christine’s fifth child and Kody’s 11th, was diagnosed with the condition in 2017 and finally got professional help in 2020.

In 2017, the Browns discovered Ysabel had scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that affects 3 million people a year, a majority of which are females aged 10 to 12. When Ysabel was diagnosed, she was still in middle school, making it hard for her to wear her brace as she didn’t want to stand out among her classmates. She wore a daytime brace underneath her clothes, as well as a nighttime brace - both of which were constructed to hold her spine’s “aggressive” curve in place. Ysabel told the Sister Wives cameras that she hated the brace because it made her look big and kept her from doing much. Besides the fact that it squeezed her and left her with bruises, it also caused her to feel extreme pain. After what Christine described as a “devastating” appointment in 2017, the third Sister Wives mother discovered her brace wasn't even working the way it should’ve.

If the curve on Ysabel Brown’s spine hit 50 degrees, there would be no other option other than to get surgery. When they discovered she'd need surgery, they were reluctant. So, instead, they took her to a program for kids with scoliosis where they use exercise techniques to help straighten the spine. Her curve began at 26 degrees and went up to 45. After the exercises, it went down to 35. Kody said that the family wasn’t interested in having Ysabel’s quality of life challenged due to a surgical procedure, and thus wanted to try every method they could before considering surgery.

In 2020, Christine announced on Facebook that her daughter needed surgery. The requirement of her surgery became an issue on the show when Kody wasn’t willing to get her treatment ASAP. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kody was not comfortable traveling out of state to New Jersey, where the surgery would take place. He offered to postpone it by six months, despite his own daughter being in extreme pain. Christine asked her Facebook followers for support, asking them to buy clothes from LuLaRoe (the sister wives’ clothing line) to help raise the money Ysabel’s surgery required. In fall 2020, Christine posted an update to the private Facebook page of LuLaRoe telling her followers that Ysabel was currently in surgery. After a 12-hour procedure, Christine shared that everything went great and thanked social media for the support.

Now, Ysabel seems to be back to living her everyday life, continuing to document her life aside from Sister Wives on Instagram. Christine concluded that Ysabel’s spine will never be 100% straight. Alas, she said that Ysabel will continue doing all the exercises she can in the upcoming years. As Kody said, “Rather than sit and just wait for something to happen, do something to try and solve the problem.”
