Sister Wives viewers are eager to learn more about the Brown family's food storage and why they choose to stock up. The family has had a lot of rituals over the years thanks to their polygamous relationships and practice of the Mormon religion. Now viewers are looking to take a deep dive into the family stockpile.
In an October 16 episode, Sister Wives viewers watched as Kody and Christine sat down for yet another conversation regarding the logistics of their divorce. After speaking about their daughter, Truely, Kody asked Christine if she wanted to take a part of their family's "food storage." TLC viewers will recall that earlier seasons showed the family's basement in Lehi, Utah packed with food, toiletries, and water. Christine giggled, noting that she doesn't want any of the family's stockpile, saying she will not live in "fear" anymore.
Kody Claims Food Storage Is Cultural
As Kody went on to explain, the idea of having a surplus of food is very cultural. He claimed the thinking behind hoarding is to make sure one has a food bank for their entire family for either the end of the world or the second coming of Christ. Kody, Christine, Meri, Janelle, and Robyn all explained that the move was taught by the Mormon church since they were children. Janelle even recalled her grandmother and mother having food banks in their homes.
According to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mormons are expected to have food stored in case "adversity" should come. The doctrine says that each should care for themselves and for their neighbor. According to the church, it is also important to care for the bishops. The bishops are leaders of the congregation and often hold the highest office of the Aaronic priesthood, so they are considered very important. The church encourages families like Kody's to not go to extremes but build their stockpile over time with items such as a three-month food and water supply, as well as enough financial reserves for not only their immediate family but also the church and its leaders.
Kody is having an eventful Sister Wives season. Viewers have been watching the patriarch lose his cool with the idea of Christine divorcing him. Kody has shared he is bitter and angry with his third wife and isn't willing to believe that she has actually moved to Salt Lake City. At least Kody can take comfort in knowing that his excess food and toilet paper are safe from Christine and happily collecting dust at Robyn's home.
