Warning: Contains spoilers for Sins of Sinister #1The Marvel Universe's two most famous heroic teams, the Avengers and the X-Men, have a long history of rivalry and warring, often only working together after a crisis strikes Earth, but Sins of Sinister #1 proves just how much good the teams could do if they worked together proactively.

While the X-Men and Avengers are obviously both heroic teams, they have often butted heads over various aspects of their heroism, most famously in the 2012 crossover event Avengers vs. X-Men. Besides this pointless war, there have been countless incidents of tension between the two teams, often between leaders Cyclops and Captain America. Scott Summers has called out Steve Rogers time and time again for not supporting the mutants of Earth when they most needed help, like after the Genoshan genocide by Cassandra Nova. Additionally, Iron Man made it clear to Firestar at this year's Hellfire Gala that he would love to use her insider position to gain more knowledge about Krakoa, which he clearly does not fully trust (and... maybe has a point). However, the Avengers and X-Men have also often worked together, like in the recent tumultuous Judgment Day event, with many crises being diverted because of their teamwork.

Yet, even more crises could have been avoided if the Avengers and X-Men worked together proactively instead of just reactively. Marvel's ongoing Sins of Sinister event follows a reshaped Marvel Universe after Mister Sinister, the longtime X-Men villain - and former member of Krakoa's government - manages to corrupt the hero Hope and install a "Sinister virus" in the mutants' Resurrection Protocols, turning the entire Quiet Council into Sinister variants. Sins of Sinister #1 - written by Kieron Gillen with art by Paco Medina - details the Quiet Council of Sinisters' slow takeover of planet Earth, which includes a team-up between the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four to destroy the anti-mutant agency Orchis.

The two teams' combined takedown of Orchis in Sins of Sinister #1 proves how tragic their silly rivalry is by showing how quickly the mutants could defeat one of their greatest enemies with the Avengers' help. In Sins of Sinister #1 the evil Quiet Council of Sinisters purposefully attacks Krakoa with a "headshot," convincing the people of Earth that Orchis has attacked them and destroyed all the back-ups of the humans the mutants have supposedly made for resurrection purposes. This immediately turns everyone on Earth against Moira X, Nimrod, and the other agents of Orchis.

The retaliation by Earth's heroes shows the X-Man Forge, Iron Man, and Reed Richards using a virus to paralyze the evil Sentinel Nimrod, one of the mutants' most feared enemies throughout the Multiverse, before the thunderous tag team of Storm and Thor take it down once and for all. Nimrod is a highly advanced robot that is so feared because of its ability to adapt and evolve, meaning the mutants have never been able to create a proper virus to take it down, proving just how major an enemy the heroes of Earth could take down if they actually collaborated. There have been various Avengers/X-Men collaborations, like the times mutants like Beast or Wolverine were on the Avengers or Captain America's Avengers Unity Squad, yet it seems like they have always become insular teams fighting specific battles, instead of working with each other's communities to solve and defeat major threats proactively. The collaboration between the various teams leads to a sweet moment of unity and brotherhood between Cyclops and Captain America, but sadly this unity is betrayed as Scott is just acting so they can corrupt the Avengers.

The X-Men & Avengers' Rivalry Stops Them From Doing The Most Good

Sins of Sinister #1 Cyclops and Captain America Working Together

It is disappointing that in this story the X-Men are actually evil and horribly use the Avengers good will against them. However, it still proves the value of their collaboration and the ongoing tragedy of their seeming inability to end their rivalry once and for all. Hopefully the X-Men and Avengers can take down Nimrod and Orchis when this reality is restored.
