Illumination Entertainment certainly had a successful 2015; the release of Minions coming on the back of Despicable Me 1 and 2, saw the company taking its place among the mainstays of animation as the movie became one of the most successful animated films of all time. The company will be looking to continue that roll of success this summer, with the release of The Secret Life of Pets. Following a group of pampered pooches and felines in New York City, the film looks to be a clever, funny film that is already gaining popularity just from its trailers alone.
Illumination will follow this up with another big release before 2016 is out. Sing will arrive in theaters just in time for the holidays, and once again, animals are the focus. This time, the mammals (and reptiles) are all sorts, shapes, and sizes, and all are competing in what is basically the animal version of American Idol. The full-length trailer for the movie has just dropped online and can be viewed, above.
Sing features an all-star voice cast, with Matthew McConaughey taking the central role of Buster Moon, a Koala with a penchant for bowties. His theater has fallen on hard times, and so Buster comes up with the idea of hosting a singing competition with a cash prize. His idea draws a wide variety of animals for all walks of life along to audition, with varying degrees of success. There's Taron Egerton as Johnny, a gorilla who loves to sing but who is being forced into a life of crime instead; Reese Witherspoon as Rosita, a downtrodden sow with no less than 25 dependent piglets, and Scarlett Johansson as Ash, a prickly (in more ways than one) hedgehog, wanting to escape her overbearing boyfriend.
Sing also features the voice talents of Seth McFarlane, Nick Offerman, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Saunders, Peter Serafinowicz, and Nick Kroll. The movie is written and directed by Garth Jennings, whose previous credits include writing and directing Son of Rambow, and directing The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
The Sing trailer is certainly amusing, though it's not as instantly likable or as clever as trailers released for The Secret Life of Pets, which should prove to be a sizable hit in theaters this summer. Also, following on from the success Disney have enjoyed with Zootopia, Illumination could have a tough act to follow - given that both movies are set in worlds where a plethora of animals exist side by side. All of that said, viewers of American Idol and similar shows will attest that the early auditions are always the best part, and certainly this trailer highlights just how funny some of those can be. A pig in a gold lame tracksuit, tackling Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance' is everything you never knew you needed and more.
Sing will arrive in U.S. theaters on December 21st, 2016.
