Playable infants have now been added to the Sims 4 base game. For nearly a decade, infants were treated more like extended furniture than actual Sims. Now, infants have a range of abilities, and interactions to make them stand out and be ready to grow into toddlers.

The original infants still remain but have been renamed as newborns. This starting life state is also greatly shortened to just a few days. Loading up Sims 4 saves made prior to the March patch will simply reclassify existing babies. There is no need to fully redesign a large portion of the town.

Adding Infants to a Family

Sims 4: How To Play As Infants (March Update)

Infants can now be directly created and edited within Create a Sim (CAS). Existing Sims can be aged down to infancy, or brand-new infants can be made using the Play with Genetics option on one or more Sims that are at least young adults or older. Infants use modified toddler clothing for everyday, formal, sleep, hot, and cold situations.

There are six traits to choose from in the base Sims 4:

  • Calm: they are less likely to get upset, but also may not bother to explore
  • Cautious: the infant prefers the familiar and dislikes all new things
  • Intense: a Sims 4 infant is easy to entertain but also quickly becomes angry
  • Sensitive: they go to sleep easily, but are very picky about food
  • Sunny: they are extremely happy, but need more social attention
  • Wiggly: an infant will quickly explore, but has trouble sleeping

New infants will also be generated from existing Sims woohooing, or if the option “Have a Baby” is toggled in Neighborhood Stories from the green top right menu of the Manage Household screen. Their genetic makeup will be more randomized, possibly having features from grandparents or beyond. Many of these traits will be locked by default but can be changed on PC or console via Sims 4 cheat codes.

Infant Needs and Actions

Sims 4: How To Play As Infants (March Update)

The March update includes several new items found in the kid's section of Build Mode. As seen in lilsimsie’s video, infants require cribs to sleep and cannot rely on bassinets or toddler beds. This can take up a lot of space if a Sims 4 family has multiple children in different life states. However, infants can still use high chairs and be read toddler-intended books.

An infant can be fed with a bottle by any Sim teenaged or older. This action can be initiated by either party, but relies on the older Sim traveling to the baby’s location. Unlike toddlers, Sims 4 infants cannot eat cooked food. Instead, if sitting in a highchair they can sample packaged mushy treats ranging from ice cream to hummus. If an infant depletes their bladder, an older Sim is needed to change the diaper.

The proper changing table is part of the Sims 4 Growing Together expansion, having only the base game will cause dirty diapers to fall to the floor and require cleaning.

Infants can crawl, but never walk - this makes it impossible for them to get to higher floors via stairs or ladders. An older Sim must carry the infant to all hard-to-reach places. They can still interact with low-hanging structures like toy boxes, bookshelves, and doll houses. These objects will be their main form of fun in the base game Sims 4. Other additional infant interactions are baked into packs like Cats and Dogs, Parenthood, and Toddler Stuff.
