When The Sims 4 released in late 2014, it was initially criticized by long-time fans of the series for its meager amount of content compared to the far more expansive Sims 3 that came before it. Since then EA has released ten full expansion packs for the game along with eighteen stuff packs, adding significant amounts of new venues, characters, features, and furniture and clothing items to the game.

With so much additional content available to purchase for The Sims 4, it can be tough for players to know what to prioritize when looking to expand their game. Each pack brings unique features that significantly add onto the base of what's available in The Sims 4, so for many players it comes down to personal preference in what they are looking for in their own Sims experience. But there are a few packs that alter the game in ways that are reminiscent to The Sims 2 or 3, with features many fans might consider essential to a Sims experience.

The Sims 4 packs can be purchased directly from EA and their descriptions include a list of added features or, in the case of The Sims' stuff packs, items and outfits, so that players can learn what they're working with before deciding on which packs to add.

Sims 4 Essential Expansion Stuff

In terms of Sims 4 expansion packs, Cats & Dogs and Seasons are two must-haves. Two similar expansions were available for The Sims 3, and both add fundamental improvements and changes to everyday living. On top of the sheer scope of gameplay changes introduced with adding seasons into the game, the Seasons pack also includes a massive amount of new furniture and clothing to help Sims better prepare for the changing weather. Cats & Dogs introduces a new world and a new career path, as well as bringing furry friends back into The Sims 4 for Sims to adopt.

Stuff packs in The Sims 4 are smaller than expansion packs, only adding items and clothing rather than gameplay changes or new worlds, but they can still introduce new and exciting content into the base game to change up the player's experience. Movie Hangout Stuff introduces colorful, artistic furniture as well as means for the Sims to host outdoor movies (with popcorn machines included). It makes for a fun outdoor hangout if players are looking to add creativity to their Sims build. Similarly, Backyard Stuff adds a host of outdoor items to bring life to the yards featured in The Sims 4. If players are looking to have their Sims spend more time indoors than outdoors, then Cool Kitchen Sims 4 Stuff Pack is an essential choice. Along with new furniture items, this pack introduces ice cream, which has varying effects on the Sim that eats it.

If players are looking for a more vibrant and lived-in world, then these packs for The Sims 4 are essential for a unique gameplay experience. New players and old fans alike will enjoy the new features they get to add to their game.
