It could be argued that The Sims is one of the flagship franchises for Electronic Arts, and the series' most recent release, The Sims 4, is no exception. The gameplay experience is entirely built around player freedom and customizability in the form of designable houses, outfits, and characters. Players can entirely influence everything from a Sims' favorite color to their relationships. As such, additional content in the form of both gameplay and items is constantly being added.
The Sims 4 made $879 per minute on average in 2020, a number that was undoubtedly assisted by a large amount of downloadable content available for the game. DLCs are nothing new for The Sims franchise, as older games like The Sims 3 followed a similar release pattern. Many fans consider it to be especially prevalent in The Sims 4, however, if only because of the state of the base game. When The Sims 4 was first released, it lacked many iconic features from other Sims games. In the eyes of some players, this issue still hasn't been resolved. Open-world exploration, customizable color palettes, and more are still missing from the game, though staple features such as toddlers and pools have since been re-added via free updates.
These updates aren't likely to slow down any time soon, either.
