The Simpsons has so many great locations where all the events of the show take place, including Mr. Burns' nuclear power plant, where Homer has proven to be an incompetent employee, and Springfield Elementary school, where Bart has distinguished himself as the most unruly child. Another popular location in the animated sitcom is Moe's Tavern.

As one of the most dedicated drinkers in TV history, Homer never fails to show up at Moe's. Neither do his friends, who consider it their favorite hangout joint in Springfield. The tavern is as old as the series itself, having first appeared in the pilot episode. This means that a lot has happened at Moe's in 32 seasons and fans would be forgiven for missing some details.

The Tavern's Phone Number

Homer orders a drink from Moe

There are conflicting details about the tavern's phone number. In season 7's "Homer the Smithers," Mr. Burns tries to call Smithers while he is on vacation, but he accidentally dials Moe's Tavern. The number he has dialed is seen as 7648-4377.

However, Moe's number appears to have changed in another episode when Homer calls. The number is revealed as 3355-1337. And when Principal Skinner asks Bart to call Homer after another school incident, the numbers show on Bart's card are: Work: 3355-6832 Home: 33555-6754 & Moe's Tavern: 3355-1239.

One Of Bart's Prank Calls Backfired

Bart Simpson Crank Calls Hugh Jass

One of the best things about Moe's Tavern is that it's constantly on the receiving end of Bart's hilarious prank calls. And only one of these prank calls has failed. This happens when the younger Simpson calls and asks to speak to a man named "Hugh Jass," who he claims is hiding in the bathroom. It's clearly a play on the phrase "huge a**."

The prank initially works, as Moe tells the customers to check the bathroom for a "Hugh Jass." Everyone laughs, but it turns out there is actually a person by that name. He quickly comes over to speak to Bart on the phone and Bart is forced to confess that it was just a prank.

The Menu Options

Moe makes the Flaming Moe drink whose recipe he stole from Homer

Moe's Tavern only serves a few select drinks, including Red Tick Beer, Henry K. Duff's Private Reserve, Duff Beer, The Beer Of Danish Kings, and an unnamed beer that has been flavored with dogs! However, a drink known as the Flaming Moe was served briefly and Moe had stolen its recipe from Homer.

There is also an unnamed drink meant to help people develop temporary amnesia. Homer takes the drink so that he can forget he is going to have a surprise party. Bart later jokes that Homer didn't need the drink since he has a habit of forgetting things anyway.

It Operates Illegally

It's once revealed that Moe's Tavern only stays open because Moe bribes Mayor Quimby whenever he comes to inspect the place. Quimby, who has had no qualms about being corrupt, gladly takes money from residents.

As per the events shown in season 11's ""Pygmoelian," the bar's license expired in 1973. In the episode, Moe gets a facelift and becomes more handsome and his looks earn him a role in a soap opera. He briefly quits his day job running the bar and states that the long-running business wasn't legal anyway.

Women Don't Like The Place

Revelers enjoy their drinks inside Moe's Tavern

Moe's Tavern has been mostly portrayed as an establishment for men. The regular patrons seen at Moe's are Homer Simpson, Carl, Barney, Lenny, Sam, and Larry, and it's very rare for women to show up. Moe even decides to use the female bathroom as his office because no one else is using it anyway.

The only woman who frequents Moe's is Marge's friend, the female body-building champion, Ruth Powers. When Moe renovates the bar in season 20, a few women show up for only a short while.

There Have Only Been Two Known Employees

Collette applies for a job at Moe's Tavern

Moe mostly does all the work in the tavern himself, but he has sought help a few times, yet only two of the employees have had storylines. Right after Moe steals the recipe of the popular Flaming Moe drink from Homer, the tavern attracts hundreds of customers, forcing Moe to get help. He hires a woman named Collette, but she later quits when she realizes that the drink's secret ingredient is cough syrup.

A Russian woman named Anastasia has also worked at Moe's. She is a "mail-order bride" that Bart organizes to be delivered to Moe as one of his pranks. Anastacia turns the tavern into a high-end establishment, but she leaves after falling out with Moe on their wedding day.

It Wasn't Always Known As Moe's Tavern

Moe's Tavern back when it was called Meaux's Tavern.

Homer once checks Marge's memory chest and finds a letter she wrote to Homer on the day Moe's Tavern opened, intending to break up with him for getting too drunk. At that time, Moe's was called Meaux's Tavern and the letter causes Homer to break up with Marge instead.

While chatting with Homer and his friends, Moe also tells them that he briefly called the place Moe's Ice Cream Carnival in its early days. This was a ploy meant to attract customers, but no one showed up.

The Cleaning Is Never Done

Homer and his friends mess up Moe's Tavern

Why Homer has never got sick from hanging out at Moe's is a mystery. The tavern has never been cleaned. This detail emerges when Homer briefly serves as Mayor Quimby's bodyguard.

When roaches walk past the two as they're having drinks, Quimby is shocked, but Moe reassures him that he is taking care of the roach problem. When the mayor isn't listening, Moe goes on to admit that no one ever cleans the place. Quimby later tells him not to worry about the roaches because the Springfield hospital is worse.

There Is A Designated Driver Policy

Customers have drinks inside Moe's Tavern

Moe's Tavern has a designated driver policy. This new rule comes into effect after Moe realizes that his customers cause 91 percent of all car accidents in Springfield.

For every group of friends that come to have drinks, one is forced to stay sober and drive the rest home. The selection of the designated driver is always achieved through a pickled egg draw. When Barney is the designated driver, his friends deliberately make him drop them at distant destinations, such as the Playboy Mansion.

It's Closed On Wednesdays

An exterior view of Moe's Tavern

Wednesdays must be tough days for Homer since Moe's isn't open. Unfortunately for the head of the Simpson family, there aren't any other notable options nearby.

But the reason the tavern doesn't open on Wednesdays is actually an admirable one. Moe Szyslak spends his Wednesdays one of two ways. He either visits the local homeless shelter to interact with poor people or the hospital to read stories to children.
