The Simpsons is one of the most beloved television shows in history. With characters such as Homer, Bart, and Marge becoming household names that everyone knows and loves, the show has been unbelievably successful with the fantastic characters being the main reason for that.

It isn't just the main family who are loved, with the show having a huge cast of side characters that fans love as well.  However, with so many different characters, it is no surprise that there are many who aren't loved by fans, with different characters frustrating fans.

Whether it be because they are written to be annoying, or that they just never clicked with audiences, the characters in this list just ended up being hated.

Mr. Largo

Mr Largo Cropped

We kickstart this list with Lisa's music teacher at Springfield Elementary, Mr. Largo. He is someone who fans do find very annoying whenever he pops up, seemingly having no interest in Lisa at all, which is shown when he tells her to give up playing.

However, the main issue with his character is just how boring he is. Whether it is the writers purposefully trying to make the teacher seem dull, or if it just how things have played out, his character never seems to evolve and just falls flat every time.

He clearly hates his job and believes he should be doing more, but other than that very little is known about him. The fact that after all these years the show hasn't developed the character is just frustrating.

Nelson Muntz

Unlike Mr. Largo, Nelson Muntz is purposefully meant to be hated by the fans. The show doesn't have too many 'villains,' but Nelson is one of them. He is a classic high school bully who spends his time picking on others, with Bart Simpson falling victim to him a lot.

The writers do a great job with Nelson because he isn't supposed to be liked. The fans do hate him and that is a goal achieved for the show. It is unlike the situation with Sideshow Bob, who should be hated but is actually beloved by fans.

There is just nothing likable about Nelson and the way he treats others for someone so young is just horrible, which allows fans to hate him easily.

Sideshow Mel

The Simpsons - Sideshow Mel

Sometimes The Simpsons can suffer from trying to capitalize and add to things that are popular on the show. Sideshow Bob and Krusty the Clown are perfect examples of that, with the show bringing in Sideshow Mel as well.

However, unlike those characters, Sideshow Mel just tends to offer absolutely nothing to the show. While side characters are never going to be the main focus, Sideshow Mel really doesn't seem to bring anything at all, making him rather pointless.

Fans don't hate him because he is a poor or annoying character, it is just because he doesn't bring anything to the table. If the show never had him, it would make absolutely no difference at all, which is why fans just don't connect with him.

Reverend Lovejoy

Reverend Lovejoy is a supporting character that appears fairly frequently throughout The Simspons, but he is one person who many fans don't actually like. He is one of the few characters who bring religion into the show, but that isn't why fans dislike him.

The main reason people aren't fans of Springfield's Reverend is because he is actually quite annoying. Whenever he pops up on the show it seems like he is always trying to get involved in other peoples business, offering his opinion when it isn't always wanted.

He constantly tries to get rid of any problems that Springfield has, but the issue with that is that the fans like many of those problems. His closeness to Ned Flanders (who is annoying on purpose) is also another reason that he's not a hit.

Maude Flanders

Maude Flanders in The Simpsons

Speaking of the Flanders family, next on the list is Maude Flanders who was also hated by fans of the show. She was so disliked that the writers actually made the decision to kill her off, making Maude one of very few characters to have been killed on The Simpsons.

While Ned is inherently good, never wanting to do the wrong thing even he has moments where he lets up and allows himself to be human. Maude, on the other hand, never seems to put a foot wrong and is so good that she just became incredibly dull.

There is nothing interesting about her or how she acts and that is why the show ended up getting rid off her. The decision to actually kill of the character was proof that she really wasn't a good character.

Herman

Herman is a character who got faded out of the show after appearing frequently as a supporting character in earlier seasons. He didn't really do anything of impressive note but he wasn't someone that the fans enjoyed seeing whenever he did pop up.

Herman seemed to have a different role every time he popped up on the show. At one point he was an arms dealer, another he sold counterfeit jeans, it was all just strange. The original plan was for him to have a different story on how he lost his arm every time he popped up, but the idea was dropped and the lack of consistency just began to annoy fans.

Dr. Marvin Monroe

Marvin Monroe's Grave in The Simpsons

Earlier in the list, we mentioned Maude Flanders who was killed off on the show, and one of the only other characters that suffered the same fate was Dr. Marvin Monroe. Much like Maude, the reasoning for that was because fans hated him.

The psychiatrist was part of the show early on but was incredibly annoying. The main reason for that was his voice, which was just horrid to listen to and considering the show already had several popular doctor related characters there was just no need for another.

Yes Guy

The fact that this character is known as 'Yes Guy,' should give a good indication as to why he is so hated. All he is known for is his constant way of saying, "yes," which he does in such an annoying manner. He's incredibly frustrating but thankfully doesn't pop up too often.

Even the characters on the show don't like him, so it is no surprise that the audience at home also hate him. Yes, he is supposed to be annoying but he is that kind of annoying that really grates on you and is someone who fans just never want to see again.

Mrs. Hoover

Clearly, the writers have a distinct impression of how teachers behave, because Mrs. Hoover is another very grump character on the show. Much like Mr. Lupo earlier in the list, she clearly hates her job and doesn't want to be doing it which is why she is always so stern and angry with her children.

She simply doesn't enjoy being a teacher and takes it out on everyone in the class, even letting Ralph teach for a while so she doesn't have to do it. Mrs. Hoover isn't someone that any fan enjoys seeing, and even though she's meant to be a little grumpy, her lack of joy is so obvious that she is just annoying to see.

Helen Lovejoy

Helen Lovejoy talks to Marge in The simpsons

Earlier in this list, we mentioned Reverend Lovejoy, who is a very annoying character. However, he is easily outdone by his wife, Helen Lovejoy who is easily the most hated character in the history of The Simpsons. Despite being married to a minister, she does the total opposite of spreading love.

She is Springfield's resident gossip, constantly spreading rumors about other characters, whether they are true or not. While she is Marge's friend, she constantly talks about her behind her back, scheming and plotting against her own friend, which is why she's hated.
