The Simpsons does a great job of depicting a real-world in animated form, and part of that comes relationships. The show has plenty of couples throughout its history, some which last throughout every season, and some that are incredibly short-lived.
Of course, with any television show, some of the couples that are created make perfect sense and you can see exactly why they are together. On the other hand, there are some relationships that make utterly no sense. Within this list, we will take a look at 10 couples from The Simpsons, listing five that are perfect together, and five that make no sense.
Make Sense: Abe & Bea
Abe Simpson, better known as Grandpa Simpson, doesn't always come across as the nicest person on the show. He is a grumpy old man who can be rude and when he's not being nasty, he will be sleeping! He is always looking for love though and he managed to find it in Bea.
Meeting at the retirement home when their medications got muddled up, it was love at first sight for them. Bea seemed to totally change Abe, making him happier than ever before. He was a completely new man until Bea sadly passed away, and this great relationship came to a heartbreaking end.
No Sense: Lisa & Ralph
You have to appreciate Ralph's persistence at trying to make a relationship work between himself and Lisa Simpson throughout the show. He might ch0o, choo, choose her, but Lisa certainly doesn't feel the same way about him, no matter what he does.
While it is somewhat romantic that Ralph continues to try and win over Lisa, it is clear the relationship will never work. He manages to score a few dates throughout the series, but it always seems to end in heartbreak for him, as Lisa just wants to be friends.
Make Sense: Apu & Manjula
One couple that does make sense in The Simpsons is the marriage between Apu and Manjula. Even though we mainly see Apu in the Kwik-E-Mart, when we do get to see him outside the shop with his wife, Manjula, it is clear that they love each other deeply.
Even though in 'The Sweetest Apu,' he cheats on Manjula, by the end of the episode they manage to patch things up. From that point on they continue to work hard on their relationship, and with their brilliant family, the duo has become one of the nicest couples on the show.
No Sense: Marge & Artie
Just imagine, in some altered reality, we could all be watching The Ziffs. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it? Artie Ziff was someone who took Marge to prom when she fell out with Homer, although their date didn't quite go to plan.
It was clear from that point that they weren't an ideal couple. However, after becoming a successful businessman, Artie decided not to give up on his true love. He constantly tries to win over Marge, but it is clear that she's really not interested in taking this any further.
Make Sense: Skinner & Edna
There's only Bart Simpson who hates the idea of this couple. Seymour Skinner and Edna Krabappel have a very interesting relationship, often sharing their love for each other behind closed doors for nobody to see. Yet they do clearly have a fondness for each other.
They both have other relationships throughout the show, and they do argue plenty of times in their line of work. But that doesn't stop them from loving each other, even though Skinner's mother constantly interferes in his love life.
No Sense: Comic Book Guy & Agnes Skinner
While her son's relationship does make plenty of sense, Agnes Skinner's time with Comic Book Guy does not. This romantic relationship was just something that nobody wanted to see, and it isn't just the audience, as even those around them weren't pleased with it.
They are two of the most horrible people in Springfield so perhaps, in that sense, they do make sense together. But it is clear with the age gap that things aren't destined to work forever between this odd duo.
Make Sense: Ned & Maude
The Flanders family is seemingly the most perfect family in all of The Simpsons. Doing everything by the book and by the name of God, not wanting to upset anybody or break any rules, they try to be the ideal family. That starts with the relationship between Ned and Maude.
The two of them are simply perfect for each other. They never seem to argue or fallout and constantly just show the ultimate love. It is a sad moment when Maude Flanders was killed off on the show, a moment that does have a major impact on Ned, which just proves how deep their love is.
No Sense: Selma & All Her Partners
Out of every character on the show, Selma Bouvier wants to find love the most. She has been married five times on the show, and none of them has worked out, proving that she's not the best at actually picking a man, although she is successful at marrying them.
Whether it be Sideshow Bob, Disco Stu, Troy McClure or any of her other partners, Selma just seemingly can't get it to work. Sometimes it's down to her, other times it is because of the man, but either way, it seems she is cursed to have as many failed marriages as she can complete.
Make Sense: Homer & Marge
There could only really be one couple to top this list. Despite the fact that they bicker constantly and Homer doesn't show Marge anywhere near enough love or attention, there's no denying they're perfect together. Starting out as high school sweethearts, no matter what happens they always have love for each other.
They are the focal point of the entire show, therefore they have to be a great couple otherwise the entire show wouldn't make much sense. The fact that the writers didn't make their relationship perfect was actually a great decision as well. After all, very few couples do have perfect relationships with absolutely no issues whatsoever. Therefore having a few faults makes them more relatable and certainly doesn't mean they are any less perfect for each other.
No Sense: The Lovejoys
He is the Reverend of Springfield, someone who tries his best to help everyone around him. Meanwhile, his partner Helen is someone who really doesn't follow the way of the Lord as she chooses to spread gossip and rumors about everyone she knows.
Nobody is safe from Helen's gossipmongering, as she is more than happy to tell the world about whatever problems are going on in the town. Even though Reverend Lovejoy isn't exactly perfect, despite his job, he is still more dedicated to the religion than his wife. They are just an odd couple that doesn't exactly match up, especially with the lives that they are supposed to lead due to their work.
