New details on Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s upcoming horror-comedy film Slaughterhouse Rulez have been released, and this time we’ll see the duo facing a subterranean monster. Last year, Pegg and Frost co-founded the production company Stolen Picture, and announced their first film, Slaughterhouse Rulez, which marks their return to the horror-comedy subgenre.
The film takes place at an elite boarding school named Slaughterhouse, where young men and women are “groomed for power and greatness”. There we will meet Don Wallace, a boy from a modest background who must navigate “a baffling new world of arcane rules and rituals, presided by sadistic sixth formers”. When a controversial fracking operation on school grounds unleashes some “unspeakable horrors” a new hierarchy is formed as students and teachers battle to survive. But what are these “unspeakable horrors”?
In an interview with Digital Trends, Simon Pegg was asked about this new project and shared a few details about the kind of creature the characters will have to face, as well as the real-life inspiration behind this monster. Pegg explained:
“It’s going to be really fun. It’s a sort of a horror comedy. It felt like the right thing for Nick and I to have as our first collaboration with Stolen Picture. It’s about a private school in the U.K which sells off parts of its land to a fracking company, and the fracking company then unleashes a subterranean monster that terrorizes the school. It’s a big metaphor for the U.K privatizing things, and it’s mixed up with some ridiculous, sloppy horror. So it’s right up our street”.
Slaughterhouse Rulez is directed by Crispian Mills (writer and director of A Fantastic Fear of Everything, also starring Simon Pegg), with a script by Mills and Henry Fitzherbert. Starring alongside Pegg and Frost are Asa Butterfield, Michael Sheen, Finn Cole, and Hermione Corfield. The film is produced by Charlotte Walls and Huberta Von Liel, with Pegg and Frost serving as executive producers, and Sony Pictures backing the project.
This film reunites Pegg and Frost, whose last on-screen appearance together was in Edgar Wright’s The World’s End, the third installment of the “Cornetto Trilogy”. Slaughterhouse marks their return to the horror genre after starring together in Shaun of the Dead (2004) - a horror-comedy film also directed by Edgar Wright - and later appearing in Grindhouse’s segment Don’t, a fake film trailer by Wright where Pegg plays a cannibal and Frost a baby eater.
The duo has faced zombies (Shaun of the Dead), an alien invasion during an epic pub crawl (The World’s End), and an actual alien (Paul), but a subterranean monster will be a whole new challenge – one that they will no doubt face with their very peculiar sense of humor. Slaughterhouse Rulez is expected to be released on October 31 in the UK, so if all goes as planned, it shouldn’t be long until fans get a first look at the film. While Pegg and Frost's latest doesn't yet have a U.S. release date, it's almost unfathomable that one won't be secured before too long.
