While streaming services seem to be taking all the attention in television these days, ABC offered up a fun new series with the recent detective show Stumptown. Set in Portland, Cobie Smulders plays Dex, a former marine who begins working as a private detective while wrestling with her own demons.

Despite a successful first season, the show became a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic and its planned second season was canceled. But Stumptown fans of the show can find some solace in the fact that there are plenty of other detective and crime movies that can hopefully fill the void.

Cop Land (1997)

1997 crime Robert De Niro

Dex is a great hero because she is damaged and therefore reluctant to act. However, as much as she tries to keep her head down, she has to do the right thing. This is very similar to the lead character in the excellent crime drama, Cop Land.

Sylvester Stallone delivers one of his best performances as a sheriff in a small town that serves as home to many NYPD cops. When he begins to witness corruption in his community at the hands of these lawmen, he is forced to confront his painful past and take action.

Motherless Brooklyn (2019)

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Edward Norton in Motherless Brooklyn

While there are plenty of old-school private detective movies that feel somewhat similar to Stumptown, Motherless Brooklyn is a recent example that feels very much in the same vein. Edward Norton plays a detective living with Tourette's syndrome who finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy involving some of New York City's most powerful people.

This is another story about someone who only seeks to do the right thing but finds themselves in a world of evil . The mystery is compelling enough and Norton delivers a fantastic performance in a movie he also directed.

Charlie's Angels (2000)

Drew Barrymore Cameron Diaz and Lucy Lui

When the television series Charlie's Angels debuted in the 1970s, the notion of female private detectives was sadly seen as gimmicky. Stumptown shows how far the genre has come in that strong female characters can lead such shows without any eyebrows raising. But the big-screen remake of Charlie's Angels did manage to deliver a pretty entertaining female-led action movie.

Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu star in the film as a trio working for a detective agency that investigates the kidnapping of a tech businessman. The three leads are great together and the action sequences are pretty fun from beginning to end.

Searching (2018)

John Cho as David Kim on a screen in Searching

Something that Stumptown did very well was tell a good mystery that grips audiences. It's not an easy thing to do and it's especially hard to find a new approach. Searching is a recent mystery film whose freshness paid off wonderfully.

Told entirely on video screens of phone and computers, it follows a father (John Cho) who desperately searches for his missing daughter. Cho makes for an excellent lead and the format is surprisingly effective as it delivers moments of suspense, humor, and heartbreak.

The Nice Guys (2016)

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys

For some reason, the private detective genre is perfectly suited for heroes who are less than perfect. Such is the case with Dex in Stumptown and it is certainly with the two heroes in The Nice Guys.

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star as detectives who reluctantly find themselves working together on a missing person case. The two leads are hilarious together as washed-up losers looking for redemption that is just out of reach. Director Shane Black is also very skilled at creating a detective story that fits into the genre while also poking fun at the tropes.

Jack Reacher (2012)

Jack Reacher stand in the middle of a street looking serious

While Jack Reacher never became the next big Tom Cruise franchise that it was meant to, the first film was a lot of fun. Cruise plays the titular hero, a former military police investigator who looks into a seemingly random shooting that left several people dead.

Reacher makes for another rough-around-the-edges detective who finds himself getting into a lot of fights. The mystery at the center of the film is also highly engrossing. Oddly enough, Cobie Smulders would go on to star in the sequel with Cruise.

Spenser Confidential (2020)

Mark Wahlberg as Spenser in Netflix Spenser Confidential

Stumptown is the kind of blue-collar hero show that can be really charming. This is the kind of role Mark Wahlberg has made a career out of, including in his most recent Netflix film, Spenser Confidential.

Wahlberg plays a former cop turned convict who is released from prison. Teaming up with an aspiring boxer, he begins investigating the murder of two police officers. The film is a bit messy with the mystery aspects, but it does have that same roughness to it that makes Stumptown so much fun.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer

Shane Black made his directorial debut which showcases his dark comedic take on the private detective genre. Robert Downey Jr. plays a criminal who gets mistakenly invited to Hollywood where he teams up with a private eye to solve a missing person case.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the same kind of sloppy detective story that is seen in most episodes of Stumptown. It is hilarious and endlessly quotable. Downey Jr. began his comeback with this excellent performance and his chemistry with Val Kilmer makes viewers wish these two could star in their own franchise.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Casey Affleck and Michelle monaghan

Ben Affleck stepped behind the camera for the first time for the dark and stunning mystery, Gone Baby Gone. Casey Affleck plays a young private detective working in Boston who is hired by a desperate family to find a young girl who was taken from her home.

In Stumptown, Dex often has to weigh her own self-interest with doing the right thing. Affleck's hero in this film is faced with similar dilemmas as he delves deeper into the mystery. But the right thing to do gets cloudier as the truth comes out.

Midnight Run (1988)

Charles Grodin

The mix of comedy and action in Stumptown is very effective. It is not always easy to pull off that combination. One of the most underrated action-comedies of all time is the hugely entertaining Midnight Run. Robert De Niro plays a cop turned bounty hunter who is tasked with transporting a white-collar criminal across the country while being pursued by the feds, the mob, and rival bounty hunters.

Not only is the tone of the film similar to Stumptown, but De Niro's hero feels akin to Dex. He is someone who tries to look out for himself and make some money but is always drawn to doing the right thing.
