Warning: SPOILERS for Annihilation - Scourge: Silver Surfer
After revealing that he was secretly the source of life in Marvel's Universe, and sacrificing his signature metallic shine in the process, the Silver Surfer has returned to the present day galaxy. Unfortunately for him, he's returning just as the events of Annihilation - Scourge: Silver Surfer #1 are beginning. And almost immediately, he and the readers learn that a non-silver Surfer has some new problems to deal with -- and some brand new powers, too.
Marvel fans who experienced the first Annihilation event don't need to learn about the universe, the Negative Zone, or the Cancerverse (and the myriad threats that reside across all three). But to make a long story short, the inhabitants of the Negative universe aren't invading the universe proper as an invasion, but fleeing in fear from the eponymous Scourge. The nature of the threat is being investigated by Nova and the former villain Annihilus, with answers hopefully coming sooner rather than later. But Norrin Radd's first run-in with a Negative Zone refugee is far less bombastic or threatening... but since he can't save them, just as stressful.

The actual nature of the Surfer's body after his Silver Surfer: Black series was never properly established. After giving up his power cosmic in the form of his silver shine, the Surfer's essence was scattered across the universe. Over billions of years it gathered enough for him to reconstitute his physical form and consciousness... or so we thought. If the Surfer is now in a 'ghost state' unable to interact with the physical world -- except by possessing individual bodies -- then the future of the hero is less certain than ever before.
