An unmade Silver Surfer movie is revealed in never before seen storyboard art. The character made his debut back in the '60s in The Fantastic Four #48 and has been associated with multiple superhero teams over the years. The character has had multiple animated appearances, and he made his live-action debut in Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer back in 2007.
Doug Jones played the Silver Surfer in Rise of the Silver Surfer while Laurence Fishburne provided the voice. After Rise of the Silver Surfer was released, there were plans to make a Silver Surfer spin-off film. The film would have been a sequel to Rise of the Silver Surfer, but the film didn't go over well with fans and critics, which is likely part of the reason why Silver Surfer never got off the ground. Even before that though, there were plans to make a stand-alone Silver Surfer film. A Silver Surfer was being developed back in the '90s with Geoffrey Wright in the director's chair, and now a few storyboards have been uncovered from the movie.
Artist Gabriel Hardman recently shared a few boards from the Silver Surfer project he was working on in the '90s. Hardman also revealed that Ewan McGregor was being eyed to play the Silver Surfer, and Galactus would have been in the film, played by Steven Berkoff. While McGregor would have played the Silver Surfer, Hardman explained that the movie would have focused more on his human form since VFX would have been too expensive in the '90s.
While fans have still yet to see a stand-alone Silver Surfer movie, the character could be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future. Disney gained the rights to the Fantastic Four when they acquired 20th Century Fox, and Kevin Feige revealed at last year's San Diego Comic-Con that they were already working on developing a new Fantastic Four film. Details on the project are of course incredibly scarce at the moment, but fans want John Krasinski to play Mr. Fantastic, a role that Krasinski has said before that he is interested in.
Even though Silver Surfer wasn't made in the '90s, it might have been for the best. A movie that revolves around the Surfer's human form likely wouldn't have gone over very well with fans, and the CGI in the film probably wouldn't have looked the best since it was in the '90s. The CGI looked decent, but not incredible, in Rise of the Silver Surfer, but including the Silver Surfer in the MCU could really bring the character to life, as well as finally give fans a comic-accurate Galactus if Marvel decided to incorporate him in the film. There's been no word on the Silver Surfer joining the MCU just yet, but seeing storyboards for the un-made Silver Surfer movie will make fans want to see the character on the big screen once again.
