Vice director Adam McKay would love to be behind a Marvel movie starring the character of Silver Surfer. McKay, who originally rose to fame with the Anchorman franchise, has quite a few projects on his plate. Vice, a movie about Dick Cheney the 46th Vice President, is on the immediate horizon. However the writer and director has several known projects lined up as a producer including the troubled sequel to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

McKay has dealt with the Marvel Cinematic Universe before in his career. McKay was one of the writers for 2015’s Ant-Man. He didn’t return for the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, in any capacity though. Yet if McKay is going to get back into the superhero genre, he wants to go much larger and weirder.

In an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, McKay was asked about what Marvel character he’d love to direct in a movie. While his initial reaction was to go for Nova (who is rumored to already have a movie in development), Silver Surfer is McKay's dream project. The director explained:

Silver Surfer man, that's the one I want to do. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer, because visually that would be just be...You could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer, with the Silver Surfer. At the same time, there's a great emotional story in there man. Where a guy has to make the choice to save his planet...you know Norrin Radd has to save his planet...that, that would be the one.

Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

For the uninitiated, Silver Surfer is one of the Marvel Universe's stranger characters. Born as Norrin Radd on the alien planet of Zenn-La, he became the Silver Surfer when he encountered the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus. Galactus was going to consume Zenn-La but Radd offered himself up to Galactus in exchange for the life of his planet. Galactus turned Radd into the cosmic entity of the Silver Surfer and thus began a subservient but antagonistic relationship between them. The Silver Surfer became Galactus' herald before he consumed a planet but the Surfer wanted to find planets devoid of sentient life for his master to consume. The Surfer's existence has been one very long struggle of moving in and out of Galactus' control.

If McKay's hypothetical Silver Surfer movie were to come to fruition it wouldn't be the first time the character appeared in live-action. The Silver Surfer made his cinematic debut in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. While the Silver Surfer's portrayal (actor Doug Jones did the motion capture, while Laurence Fishburne provided the voice) was one of the movie's highlights, Rise of the Silver Surfer wasn't a success. Critics ravaged the movie and the box office was nearly as disappointing. The sequel tanked the burgeoning Fantastic Four movie franchise until the even bigger failure that was 2015's Fantastic Four reboot.

It's true that Silver Surfer is one of the Marvel characters still under Fox's control as proved by his involvement in 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer. X-Men and related characters like Deadpool are currently the only Marvel characters under Fox's control that have movies in development. However with Disney acquiring Fox's assets, the chances of a Silver Surfer movie in the MCU isn't all that outlandish. After all, following Avengers: Endgame there has been a rumor that the MCU will get more even cosmic. There's no character much more cosmic than Silver Surfer.
