A Little Update on Sony's Silver & Black Spider-Man Spinoff

Venom producer Matt Tolmach offers a brief update on another Spider-Man spinoff, Silver & Black. Sony is currently in the process of developing their own comic book movie franchise - drawing from the 900 characters they currently have the rights to. A crossover with the new cinematic Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland in the MCU) has not been confirmed, but judging by Venom's PG-13 rating, it's certainly the hope.

Sony's line-up includes projects like Silver & Black and a film starring Jared Leto as Morbius the Living Vampire. The update for the former film comes after some uncertainty regarding the project, with the film reportedly going "back to the drawing board" in June of this year after a production delay in February. The film, which is to feature Spider-Man characters Black Cat and Silver Sable, was last reported to have been scrapped, in lieu of two separate solo films for each of the characters. The same report also claimed that Prince-Bythewood would not have a writer-director credit on either solo film, potentially only remaining as a producer.

However, in an interview with Screen Rant, Tolmach appeared to contradict the previous report. When asked about Silver & Black, Tolmach responded in a manner that implied not only that the Black Cat and Silver Sable projects were still together as one, but that Prince-Bythewood was still fully on board the project, at the very least in a screenwriting capacity.

Screen Rant: How far along are we with Silver and Black?

Matt Tolmach: Working on it.

Screen Rant: So still working on the script, making sure you get all of the kinks out?

Matt Tolmach: Yes. Yes. Gina Prince-Bythewood's right. The script's gotta be right. It's true with all of these movies.

Judging from Tolmach's comments, it sounds as if though Sony still has confidence in a Silver & Black film project, despite its apparent production mishaps. Perhaps the studio doesn't believe that the two female characters should lead their own movies just yet, but the performance of Venom will certainly affect the outcome of potential films such as this one. It may be that Sony is waiting to observe how Venom will do financially and critically first, before possibly ramping up production for Silver & Black.

The superhero film climate is certainly to Sony's advantage for a Black Cat and Silver Sable film - with the massive success of Wonder Woman, and excitement for Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel, the higher demand for female-led comic book movies is finally being met by Hollywood. For Prince-Bythewood specifically, she may have more clout given her involvement with Marvel Television's Cloak & Dagger. And even the characters of Black Cat and Silver Sable are enjoying their own fame at the moment, with Black Cat and Silver Sable having key roles in the newest Spider-Man game for PlayStation 4, the former character being the center of the upcoming DLC. If there's a time for Silver & Black, it would be just about now.
