Meet Silver Sable And Black Cat
Sony has long been interested in launching a series of Spider-Man spinoffs. In late 2014, leaked emails from Sony expressed interest in two particular characters; Silver Sable and Black Cat. Silver Sable is a mercenary who hails from the fictional country of Symkaria. She's a skilled warrior who leads a group known as the Wild Pack, and their mercenary activities are Symkaria's main source of income. Meanwhile, Black Cat is a sneak-thief who has traditionally been a love interest for Spider-Man.
In the aftermath of the Sony hack, the studio reached an unprecedented deal with Marvel to allow Spider-Man to join the MCU. However, Sony retained the right to launch their own villain-focused movies, such as Venom. In March 2017, after months of rumors, Sony finally confirmed that they were working on Silver & Black. This movie will bring Silver Sable and Black Cat together in what Sony hopes will be a blockbuster hit.
The Cast Of Silver & Black
In June last year, director Gina Prince-Bythewood told intrigued fans that she hoped to start casting soon. Although there have been a number of leaked casting calls for the film, no details have actually been announced to date. There have been reports that Sony is looking for two young lead actresses, with both Black Cat and Silver Sable intended to be in their 20s. Meanwhile, rumors suggest that Sony is casting supporting members of the Wild Pack, Silver Sable's mercenary band.
The Villains Of Silver & Black
Although there have been no official announcements, recurrent rumors have suggested that that main villain will be a character named Mendell Stromm (aka Robot Master). Stromm will be portrayed as a senior figure in the multinational company Oscorp, a geneticist who has conducted a bevy of illegal experiments - including in Silver Sable's homeland, Symkaria. He will be supported by two key villains, Scorpion and Tarantula. Meanwhile, other Spider-villains are expected to appear; Tombstone and the Chameleon have been mentioned by several sources.

Silver & Black And Sony's Spider-Villains Universe
In early 2015, Sony reached an unprecedented agreement with Marvel that allowed Spider-Man to be brought into the MCU. At the same time, the studio didn't want to give up on making their own superhero films. Their solution was to launch a new shared universe, one centered around Spider-Man's rich rogues' gallery. It's an intriguing idea, although fans are unsure about the execution. The first film will be Venom, and fans are unsure how the tongue-slavering symbiote's origin story will work without a major role for Spider-Man. Silver & Black is the second movie, and this sounds to be heavily invested in world-building so as to prepare the ground for more movies.
What Is The Plot Of Silver & Black?
Little has been officially revealed about the plot of Silver & Black. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood has claimed the film is inspired by the examples of Thelma & Louise and Midnight Run. "I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other," she explained, "but need each other to survive."
It appears that Mendell Stromm, a senior figure in Oscorp, is the main villain. According to recurring rumors, Black Cat will steal important information from Oscorp - possibly a matter of international defense. Silver Sable and her Wild Pack will be hired to bring Black Cat in, beginning a game of cat-and-mouse that takes the two women across the globe. When Silver Sable learns the nature of the information Black Cat has stolen, her goal will change; she'll become focused on revenge against Stromm. It's important to note that all this is according to rumors, but the same details have been consistently pushed by a number of sites, all claiming different sources.
Rumor: Norman Osborn To (Sort Of) Appear
The main villain of Silver & Black is believed to be Mendell Stromm, who will be a senior executive working for Oscorp. Given that's the case, it's no surprise that there are rumors Norman Osborn will appear - albeit after a fashion. Sony is reportedly considering casting an actor to voice the character. They're reluctant to have Osborn be seen in the film because they hope to make their Spider-villain spinoffs a tangential part of the MCU. They believe Marvel will eventually cast someone as Norman Osborn, and by keeping him off-camera they prevent a possible clash.
Will Silver & Black Be Part Of The MCU?
Right now, it's uncertain whether or not Sony's Spider-villains universe will be considered part of the wider MCU. Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal famously described them as "adjuncts." That kind of loose relationship is similar to the one between the MCU movies and TV shows. However, Pascal and Marvel's Kevin Feige swiftly backtracked on this statement, and since then issued a number of contradictory comments.
Perhaps the most interesting detail in Silver & Black is that the film reportedly features Scorpion. This character was played by Michael Mando in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Should he reprise the role in Silver & Black, it will offer strong evidence that the movie has some sort of tie to the MCU.
The Director Of Silver & Black
In May last year, it was confirmed that Sony had recruited Gina Prince-Bythewood as director. It's an interesting move for Prince-Bythewood, who usually focuses on the drama world. She found popular acclaim with her debut film Love and Basketball, and is best known for directing The Secret Life of Bees. This will actually mark the second time Prince-Bythewood has worked with superheroes; Marvel Television recruited her to direct the pilot of their Cloak & Dagger series.
The Writers Of Silver & Black
The first draft of the script was written by Lisa Joy (Pushing Daisies, Westworld). For a second draft, Sony recruited Christopher Yost - a name familiar to any Marvel fan. Yost first became involved with the superhero genre when he was hired to write scripts for the X-Men: Evolution animated series. Along with his frequent collaborator Craig Kyle, he created the character of X-23 before the two of them transitioned to writing comics and rewrote X-23's origin for the X-Men comics. He's been writer of a number of popular comic book runs, including a critically-acclaimed X-Force series. Meanwhile, Yost is also no stranger to writing scripts for the big screen; he was one of the scriptwriters of Thor: The Dark World. James Mangold actually liaised with both Yost and Kyle when recreating X-23 for last year's Logan.
We're A Long Way From A Trailer
The film's production has been delayed indefinitely, with Prince-Bythewood noting that she's rewriting the script. Shooting is still expected to start later this year, but it's increasingly likely the movie's release will be pushed back. No trailers, posters, or set photos have yet been revealed. This page will be updated as details emerge.
