The Marvel hero Silk will face threats both ancient and modern in her new solo series beginning in January 2022. Featuring the return of Takeshi Miyazawa on art duties, the series will be written by Emily Kim and follow on from the events of the Silk: Threats and Menaces miniseries.

Created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, and first debuting in 2014 in The Amazing Spider-Man #4, Silk has since grown into one of the most popular of Marvel’s newer characters. After being bitten by the same spider that gave Peter Parker his powers, Korean-American teenager Cindy Moon gained almost identical super powers except for the additional ability to shoot organic webbing from the tips of her fingers. Silk was then locked away in a bunker by her family for ten years before being freed by Peter Parker.

Having since faced the darkness of her past and made peace with her family the new Silk series is looking to focus on both the character’s future, rather than her tragic past, and her relationship with her Korean heritage. Talking to SheKnows, series writer Emily Kim talked about moving the character beyond her past trauma stating, “Now that she's truly gotten over her past, [Silk] realizes she hasn't spent any time considering her future, which is leaving her a bit lost.” Marvel also has stated that the series will find the hero facing something it's described as “ancient Korean magic” and the even more sinister threat of sudden social media popularity. In the same interview, Emily Kim highlighted how “ironic” it is for Silk, of all of Marvel’s heroes, to become popular on social media: “She doesn't get any of it, which highlights how she's out of touch with her generation.” Silk’s lack of knowledge of the digital age has become something of a running joke with the character, with the Threats and Menaces series revealing that Cindy’s co-workers have nicknamed her “Analog.”

It is interesting to learn that the new series will once again feature Silk confronting a mystical threat while rubbing shoulders with the powers of social media. The miniseries Silk: Threats and Menaces, by Maurene Goo and Takeshi Miyazawa, saw the web-spinner facing off against an ancient Japanese demon-cat called Kasha. Kasha had been hired by the influencer/evil genius Saya Ishii, the illegitimate daughter of the supervillain Silvermane, to help her take control of the gangs of New York but found herself betrayed by the demon and was forced to recruit Silk’s help. It seems Marvel feels that they’ve struck gold with this juxtaposition of the old world and the new being simultaneous sources of stress for Silk and are looking to continue this trend in 2022.

While Marvel has not revealed how long the new Silk series will run, it is good for fans to see that the publisher has recognized the character’s popularity has only increased since her debut in 2014. To see the hero face off against ancient Korean magic, readers will have to make sure to pick up Silk #1 in January 2022.
