Season 6 of HBO’s Silicon Valley will be its last, but the series plans to go out with a bang, according to the latest trailer. The tech comedy has skewered its namesake and the billionaire bros that’ve made its name synonymous with so much more than technology meant to make the world an incrementally better place since 2014, and has seen shake-ups and near wins during that run. But as all good things must come to an end, the ensemble will begin its swan song in late October, giving the premium network’s familiar Sunday night lineup a some familiar faces in between newcomers Watchmen and Mrs. Fletcher.
Silicon Valley season 5 ended on a high note for Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) and the rest of the Pied Piper team, as their main competitor Hooli was bought out by Amazon while their platform became the biggest name in town. With a billion-dollar business at their command, Richard, Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani), Gilfoyle (Martin Starr), and Jared (Zach Woods) must now contend with bigger threats and much more scrutiny from the federal government. The latter is no doubt a reference to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s recent and increasingly frequent appearances before Congress.
The new trailer might be taking aim at some of the biggest names in tech, but it’s also not shy about diminishing the accomplishments of its main characters. In particular, it would seem Dinesh has discovered a program that ruins everything by listening to your conversation and then tailoring the user’s internet or computer experience around what’s being discussed. The invasion of privacy results in a pretty funny gag and an onslaught of adult entertainment popping up on Dinesh’s screen. Take a look at the full trailer for Silicon Valley season 6 below:
HBO has said goodbye to a number of long-running series in 2019, starting with the still contentious end to Game of Thrones, and continuing with the suitably dark and hilarious end to Veep. Both were railings and award winners for the network, and with Silicon Valley set to close its doors before the year is out, it seems that 2020 will be an interesting test for the premium cabler.
That being said, HBO still has another Emmy favorite in its back pocket with Barry, which will return in 2020 for season 3. It also has Avenue 5 on the horizon, which brings Veep creator Armando Iannucci back to the network and into the future with his sci-fi comedy. So while it’s going to be a very different HBO in the coming year, it’s not so bleak, even without the familiar faces of Pied Piper.
Silicon Valley season 6 premieres Sunday, October 27 @10pm on HBO.
