Acclaimed film star Sigourney Weaver has not only begun work on Avatar 2, but also apparently Avatar 4 and 5. Weaver has never doubted the perhaps over-zealous James Cameron in his decision for the making of four sequels, in fact she's been quoted saying, "there's a very good reason" behind the choice. It's therefore not surprising she's already on board for 4 and 5.
Set in the 22nd century and focused on the human endeavor to settle in the land of Pandora for mining purposes, the original film starred Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Michelle Rodriguez. Upon its release, almost a decade back, it broke box office records by becoming the highest grossing film of all time. Another Cameron film, Titanic, previously held the record. This success built a fandom but also led to a more tangible success in the form of three Academy Awards. All of this paved the way to the promise of four sequels, though Cameron has mentioned before that the fourth and fifth sequels remain dependent upon the success of Avatar 2 and 3.

THR interviewed Weaver about the upcoming Avatar sequels as well as the #MeToo movement and climate change; within the interview Weaver discussed how she's already busy with Avatar 4 and 5. When asked whether or not reprise her role of Ellen Ripley in a potential Neill Blomkamp Alien 5, Weaver explained how her time is currently monopolized, spent mainly with Cameron on his epic four film rollout.
We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably. I’m busy doing Avatar 4and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.
Avatar 2, the first of Cameron's enormous undertaking, with its billion dollar budget, hit a snag a while back as it was initially hinted the film would be released in 2018 but that date has since been moved. Despite the delayed timeline of the initial sequel, Cameron remains confident that Avatar 5 will premiere in 2025, according to schedule. Avatar 2 will now hit theaters on December 18, 2020 – notwithstanding any further delays.
Almost ten years since the original, fans wait in anticipation for the upcoming Cameron saga. With its budget and star power it'd be difficult to disappoint, although perhaps he's gone too far and stretched the plot over too many sequels. Yet, if one looks at the entire universe he built over the scope of just one movie, it's not difficult to imagine how this legendary filmmaker could fill the space of four sequels. It will be exciting to see what Cameron has up his sleeve in the coming years, and at the very least, fans can look forward to four sequels full of Sigourney Weaver.
