The late Sidney Poitier will have his life story depicted in a new documentary coming to Apple TV+, produced by Oprah Winfrey. Poitier, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 94, was a legend in Hollywood- the first Black man to win the Academy Award for best actor in 1963. In his later career, Poitier produced and directed several films. Poitier’s milestone award achievement came amid the height of the civil rights movement and was seen as a turning point for equality in the industry.

Now, following the actor and director’s passing, Collider has revealed that Oprah Winfrey and Apple films are teaming up for a yet-untitled documentary based on Poitier. The project, which has apparently been in the works for over a year, will be directed by filmmaker Reggie Hudlin; whose previous work includes 2019’s Clarence Avant documentary The Black Godfather.

Oprah’s role as a producer comes after a series of collaborations with the streaming service, including her most recent chat show The Oprah Conversation. The presenter’s production company is now set to bring this Poitier-based documentary to screens at some point in the near future. While further details are scarce on the untitled documentary, it should prove to be a poignant depiction of a life well-lived by one of Hollywood’s most important faces.
