A second trailer for Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Shutter Island hit the Web a few days ago and we thought you'd like a (belated) look at it. If you haven't heard, the film is adapted from the Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) novel and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels, who travels to the titular island in Massachusetts' Outer Harbor to help track down a murderous patient who has escaped from the island's hospital for the criminally insane.
Of course, once Daniels and his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) arrive on Shutter Island the proverbial you-know-what hits the proverbial fan, and it is quickly revealed that nothing - the island, the hospital, the missing patient or even the Marshalls themselves - is what it seems.
Even though some of our readers staunchly disagree, I've been a fan of Lehane's novels-turned-movies. Whether in the hands of experienced vets (Clint Eastwood with Mystic River) or questionable directors (Ben Affleck with Gone Baby Gone), the Lehane books have resulted in films good enough to have both earned Academy Award nominations. And when you put the outstanding combo of Scorsese and DiCaprio together with Lehane's material...Well, let's just say I expect gold.
Take a look at the trailer for yourself:

Now I haven't read the novel, but I do know that with these sort of trippy/crazy mystery films there is always a danger that the narrative could fly off the rails into pure absurdity (see: Pandorum). I have no reason to doubt either Lehane or Scorsese on that front, but ya never know until know...
Shutter Island stars DiCaprio, Ruffalo, Sir Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson and Jackie Earle Haley. The film recently had its release date pushed back to February 19, 2010.
