The Honest Trailer for Shrek 2 takes aim at the movie's endless fart gags, as well as the ending that it says had late 1990s kids more shook than the finale of Avengers: Endgame. The Shrek franchise was one of the most successful of the 2000s, and it still resonates in popular culture almost two decades after the first film was released.

The Shrek franchise kicked off in 2001, starring Mike Myers as the titular hero, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Shrek's paramour Fiona. Shrek became an instant animated classic and spawned three sequels, a spin-off film (Puss in Boots), two TV specials, and a Broadway musical. Shrek 5 has been in development for years, but there is little known about the film or how it could extend the Shrek franchise. The plot follows Shrek and the rest of the gang as they return to Fiona's home kingdom, the land of Far Far Away, to visit her parents. There they encounter a host of classic fairy tale characters, including Prince Charming and The Fairy Godmother. Now, the hit film has been given the Honest Trailers treatment.

Shrek 2 is the newest film to be skewered by Screen Junkies as part of the Honest Trailer Summer Blockbuster series. The video takes aim at a number of the franchise's trademarks, including the dated animation, endless pop culture references, multiple fart gags, the fact that people on Twitter can't stop talking about how hot human Shrek is, and the marriage at the heart of the story that is "clearly doomed." One of the trailer's best gag, though, compares the film's third act to the finale of Avengers: Endgame, saying that the twists and deaths in Shrek 2 were more shocking for kids than they were for their adult counterparts in 2019. Screen Junkies whole Honest Trailer can be seen below:

It's not all negative, though, as the Honest Trailer also has a lot of love for the movie, saying it's "a rare sequel that manages to naturally evolve its characters, expand its universe and develop the theme of the first film even deeper." While the original Shrek is still one of DreamWork's most popular films, Shrek 2 was a bigger hit, almost crossing the magical $1 billion mark at the global box office on a $150 million budget.

Shrek 2's Honest Trailer is an accurate take on one of the most-loved animated films of the past two decades. Shrek 2 is arguably one of the high points in the franchise, as the Shrek spin-offs and further sequels suffered from diminishing returns. What the Honest Trailer drives home is that while the first Shrek was fun, the second managed to expand on that and come up with a new story that made you love the characters even more. It's a great dose of nostalgia and makes you want to watch Shrek 2 again, despite the old school animation.
