Over the years, Netflix has become known for releasing cutting-edge shows like The End of the F-ing World, which often gets everyone talking. The show is based on a graphic novel, but it is as far removed from superhero fare as a show can get. Instead, it is a coming-of-age story with peculiar dark humor and quirky main characters. The first season saw a teenager named James who believes he is a psychopath, seeking his first murder victim. However, when he finds that victim in another teen named Alyssa, the two eventually fall in love.

The End of the F-ing World appeals to adults as well as teenagers, and the second season kept that same off-kilter dynamic, with a new young killer seeking revenge against the characters from the first season. With the show ended after two seasons, there are several shows like The End of the F-ing World, both on Netflix and on other streaming services that share the same unique and genre-bending storytelling and quirky characters. While not all shows reach the level of the Netflix series, there are plenty that strives to remain different from the basic streaming series that flood TV today.

Released in 2020, Grand Army is a glittering, poetic, impactful Netflix Original that flew under the radar. The series focuses on five main characters, all of whom come from vastly different backgrounds and social circles. They attend Grand Army High School, the biggest and most prestigious school in Brooklyn. The first episode kicks off when a bomb explodes near the school campus, throwing everything into disarray. From this point, the students begin spiraling, without realizing that all the events lead back to the day of the bombing. Much like shows like The End of the F-ing World, this takes kids and put them into situations they have no way of dealing with.

Beautifully dark, Dare Me is an exploration of volatile female friendships set in the world of cheerleading and high school. When a new coach comes to take over Sutton Grove's cheer squad, top girl Beth feels threatened. She becomes jealous of the new coach when she seems to be stealing her best friend Addy away from her. As she loses her power over the squad, Beth spirals, and Addy rises. Mental health and sexual autonomy are big themes in this show, as well as female friendships, which is something shows like The End Of The F-ing World don't have the room to explore with as much complexity.

Shows like The End Of The F-ing World don't shy away from any topic and certainly don't sugarcoat anything. This British series is split into three generations of teens, with two seasons dedicated to each group. Though this show doesn't have any voiceover narration, each episode is character-centric, which allows a deeper insight into the characters' minds. The series is gritty in every way, from its visuals to its themes, which may not always result in the most pleasant viewing experience, but it gets the message across. The characters are lovable despite their flaws, which is something shows like The End Of The F-ing World are known for.

10 Russian Doll (2019- )

  • Stream now on Netflix

With two seasons on Netflix, Russian Doll is a great series about Nadia Vulvokov (Natasha Lyonne), a game developer who relives the same night again and again, Groundhog Day-style. The show received several nominations and has been praised both for its comedy and for Lyonne's performance. Much like shows like The End Of The F-ing World, Russian Doll is an easily digestible binge-watch with lead characters trying to understand their place in the world. It is a lot more sci-fi in this case, but both shows offer smart writing and intriguing characters.

9 Teachers (2001-2004)

Another British show, Teachers follows a group of awkward but fun-loving teachers. The first season even featured future Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln as a probationary teacher in the secondary school. The series was nominated for six BAFTAs and even got a short-lived American version in 2006. With its peculiar and sometimes dark humor and curious details, Teachers is a great follow-up for those who love shows like The End of the F-ing World.

8 SKAM (2015-2017)

The characters from the Norwegian series Skam.
  • Not available for streaming

Translated as "Shame" this show follows a group of Norwegian high-school students and the problems they deal with as they grow up. Not only does the series use an innovative real-time format, but it also explores themes such as homosexuality, sexual abuse, relationships, eating disorders, mental health, religion, and identity. After four seasons, the series was adapted for several English-language outlets, but none of them live up to the greatness of the original. Nevertheless, SKAM is certainly worth checking out for anyone looking for deeper themes in shows like The End Of The F-ing World.

6 Misfits (2009-2013)

The cast of Misfits on BBC.
  • Stream now on Hulu

This British show became quite popular during its run and was loved both by critics and casual viewers. Despite its ever-changing cast, the series ran for five seasons and was adapted for an American audience. The premise is fairly simple: a group of young offenders is sentenced to work in a community service program. Suddenly, the town is hit by a strange electrical storm. Once it's passed, the characters realize that they have gained supernatural powers. Adding superhuman powers to the ideas of teenage misfits makes this a fresh idea for fans of shows like The End Of The F-ing World.

Sex Education is probably the closest in tone to shows like The End of the F-ing World. The humor is not as dark, but the overall atmosphere is quite similar. Also similar is the critical acclaim it's received. The story follows Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), a high school student whose mother is a sex therapist. Even though he knows a lot about sex and people's emotions, he's intensely shy and awkward. This becomes a problem when local genius Maeve Wiley convinces him to start an underground sex therapy clinic at school.
