Warning: contains spoilers for Chapter 5 of Aliens Area

It has been five weeks and five chapters since Shonen Jump's new alien manga series, Aliens Area by Fusai Naba, debuted and its first major fight will kick off in the next chapter. So far, the series has relied on references to other popular shonen to stay relevant in readers' minds, so this is a big step for the series to take. Not only will the battle explain the power/tech system, but it will also establish the series' own identity within the shonen genre.

Aliens Area tells the story of Tatsumi Tatsunami, an orphaned teenager whose arm was infected with an alien substance. After being attacked by aliens, an investigator named Hajime Sharaku recruits Tatsumi into Foreign Affairs 5, a secret government agency that deals solely with extraterrestrial activity. Tatsumi is placed on Team 7, just like the iconic team from Naruto, and soon after, Sharaku takes him on his first mission.

The pair are investigating a disturbance in a warehouse, just to find an alien princess sent to Earth to escape the war on her home planet. The princess' guardian tells the team that an assassin is after them, and taking that as a cue, the assassin attacks. Sharaku barely dodges the assassin's strike, but he notices that the tech he is using is the same tech used by Foreign Affairs 5. Sharaku and a few other characters have used tech powers earlier in the series, but detail as to how they work, the extent to which they can be used, and who is capable of wielding them has yet to be answered. That's what this fight is going to clear up. Hopefully, Tatsumi will get to do more than copy One Piece's Devil Fruit attack.

Final pages of Aliens Area Ch 5, setting up the series' first major battle

A neat thing that Naba does with the tech system is weave the name of the abilities into the artwork, rather than simply stating the name in text. That is one original idea the series does have compared to other popular series in shonen, and it's also why this battle is so important. Shonen Jump has had a knack for canceling new series early in their publication history to make room for newer series, long before the canceled series are able to shine and be what they are intended to be. If Aliens Area can pull off a compelling and interesting fight, then the series stands a chance against Shonen Jump's "Under 19" club.

Aliens Area is a new series that shows promise, and hopefully, it will deliver. This first major battle between Tatsumi and Sharaku against the alien assassin is Naba's chance to make the exposition exciting and original, while also cementing Aliens Area's place within Shonen Jump.
