Elisabeth Moss is on the trail of a time-traveling serial killer in the new trailer for Shining Girls. Moss won rave reviews for her lead performance in the harrowing 2020 horror movie reboot The Invisible Man.
After being pitted against an invisible menace in that Blumhouse hit, Moss will again do battle with a unique brand of bad guy in a new Apple+ series based on Lauren Beukes’ 2013 novel The Shining Girls. The story casts Jamie Bell as Harper Curtis, a drifter living in Chicago during the Depression who stumbles upon the secret to time travel. The catch is that Curtis must use his time travel knowledge to murder the so-called “Shining Girls,” whose brightness and potential has doomed them to an early death. Moss plays Kirby, one of Curtis’ would-be victims, who survives her encounter with the killer and sets out to end his time-hopping reign of terror.
Novelist Beukes’ unique blending of fantasy, sci-fi and thriller – that frankly sounds like it could’ve been dreamed up by Stephen King – was actually bought by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way back in 2013 and is at last making its way to Apple TV+ as a streaming series. Emmy-winning Mad Men star Moss in fact does double-duty on Shining Girls as she directed a pair of episodes as well as playing the lead (Michelle MacLaren and Daina Reid are the other episode directors). Besides aforementioned Billy Elliott star Bell, Moss is also joined in the Shining Girls cast by Wagner Moura (Elysium), Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) and Amy Brenneman (NYPD Blue). Moss is obviously no stranger to the world of streaming as she leads the cast of Hulu’s acclaimed series The Handmaid’s Tale, which released its fourth season in 2021. Her work on that ever-harrowing Hulu show plus her long run on AMC’s acclaimed Mad Men have in fact gotten Moss dubbed “The Queen of Peak TV.”
It of course remains to be seen if Shining Girls adds to that impressive peak TV legacy for Moss. The material does seem to be perfectly suited to her, as she’s demonstrated a facility for playing strong women who stand tall in the face of menacing threats from evil men (or evil societies, as in the case of The Handmaid’s Tale). The fantasy/sci-fi twist of the new show should only add to its appeal as it seeks to stand out from the incredibly packed slate of streaming offerings set to hit people’s devices in the near future. Shining Girls arrives on Apple TV+ on April 29, 2022.
