Shields are a key part of Kratos’ arsenal in God of War: Ragnarök, allowing the Ghost of Sparta to block, deflect and parry enemy attacks during combat. Over the course of God of War, Kratos relied solely on his Guardian Shield for defense, but God of War: Ragnarök features a total of five shields players can find and equip. Each of these shields has its own set of stat boosts and special abilities, allowing players to choose a shield that best suits their own playstyles.

Kratos will start God of War: Ragnarök with a basic shield, but as players progress through the story, four shields will become available. Two can be crafted at Brok and Sindri’s workshop using resources players have gathered, while the other two can be found in specific locations. Collecting all five shields will award the Phalanx trophy, making it a worthwhile endeavor even for players who’ve settled on a shield that best suits their own combat playstyles.

Notes

Guardian Shield

God of War Ragnarök Kratos Holding Guardian Shield

Obtained at the start of God of War: Ragnarok’s main story, but is broken early on. Brok will fix it and return it to Kratos at the start of The Word of Fate main quest.

A balanced shield, players can quickly double tap L1 to Shield Check an enemy and break their guard or Parry.

Dauntless Shield

God of War Ragnarök Kratos Holding Dauntless Shield

Crafted at Brok and Sindri’s workshop.

Designed for parries, players can double tap L1 to Shield Bash enemies, dealing high Stun damage. Parries with this shield do stun and increase the power of subsequent Shield Bash attacks.

Stone Wall Shield

Crafted at Brok and Sindri’s workshop.

Designed to absorb attacks, blocking attacks with this shield builds charge. Players can double tap L1 to Shield Slam enemies. If the shield is fully charged, enemies will be launched away. Players can also block enemy guard-break attacks if they’re not fully charged. Following up with one of God of War: Ragnarök’s light runic attacks is a good tactic.

Shatter Star Shield

Can be found in a Legendary Chest in The Abandoned Village in Vanaheim.

Players can hold L1 to charge their shields and double tap L1 to Shield Punch enemies, knocking them back. Taking damage reduces charge. Players can also gain charge by blocking an attack just before it hits.

Onslaught Shield

According to Powerpyx, this is obtained after fighting Garm in Helheim.

Designed to allow players to approach enemies. Players can double tap L1 to Shield Rush enemies, knocking them back.

All shields can be upgraded at Brok and Sindri’s workshop using collected resources, allowing players to keep pace with the increasingly challenging enemies that appear. Players can also improve Kratos’ defense in other ways, including by collecting God of War: Ragnarök’s best armor sets or equipping items that offer defense stat boosts.

However, a solid shield goes a long way in God of War: Ragnarök, and players will find that investing resources into upgrading their shields is a great way to increase the Ghost of Sparta’s survivability as he journeys through the Nine Realms.
