A new trailer released by SEGA Europe confirms that the HD remastered versions of Shenmue I and II will get a release date in August. Get ready to relive the Shenmue saga all over again. The first Shenmue game released in 1999 for the SEGA Dreamcast and introduced an action-adventure title set in an open world environment complete with hand-to-hand combat and roleplaying elements.
The title was groundbreaking: It was one of the first games to include day and nighttime within the environment, as well as variable weather, non-player characters, vending machines and arcade games. The story was equally as strong, which followed the adventures of Ryo Hazuki as he went on a mission to find the person responsible for his father's death in 1980s China. Shenmue II followed in 2001 as a direct sequel to the first game, building upon the elements created in the first. Both games act as early examples of what many action-adventure RPGs have become since then.
Earlier this year, Sega announced that it had plans to give both Shenmue games an HD remaster. Recently, rumors started surfacing that the remasters would arrive in August. Now, Sega officially confirmed that date with a trailer for the games and got more specific: Fans can expect to return to the world of Shenmue on August 21.
The creator of Shenmue, Yu Suzuki, announced a Kickstarter campaign for a third game in the franchise in 2015. The campaign met its goal of $2 million within eight hours of going live, with a final total raised of around $6 million. It became the highest-funded video game in Kickstarter history.
Although Suzuki is working on Shenmue III, it was noticeably absent from this year's E3 conference. There isn't a lot of information about the title, which many expect to arrive in 2019. It could become one of the biggest games ever, at least in hard drive requirements since reports suggest it could require up to 100GB of hard drive space. Fans are waiting impatiently for more information, as well as a trailer and release date, but it doesn't look like either is coming anytime soon.
In the meantime, fans will get a chance to play the HD remastered versions of the two original games on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC late this summer. With so much buzz surrounding Shenmue III, it's likely that some gamers will get a chance to discover Shenmue I and II for the very first time in August, while others will get to return to a saga that they love.
