Shenmue 3 has finally given fans a good look at what to expect when it releases late this summer, and there's nothing in the gameplay trailer to suggest it won't be a traditional Shenmue experience. Whether that's a good or bad thing will depend on player perspective, but now prospective purchasers can take a glimpse at what they'll be getting into in August.

Shenmue 3 is the result of a long, laborious love shared by both the game's fans and its developers. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for over a decade, with momentum coming in spurts and stops before a Kickstarter campaign was launched. The campaign was wildly successful, and Shenmue 3 has been in development ever since, with over $7 million USD raised toward the game's production. Shenmue and Shenmue 2 have often been cited in discussions of the greatest games of all-time, and with a massive cult following for the series, Shenmue 3 will have a lot to live up to when it releases later this year.

Shenmue 3's gameplay trailer gives us a glimpse into Ryo, Shenhua, and Lan Di's lives during the game, as well as a lengthy look at Guilin's more rural environment. The trailer also serves as an introduction to a few new characters and the game's fighting system, which looks as though it will be consistent with the series' previous iterations. Here's a look at the full trailer, which was revealed at this past weekend's MAGIC festival in Monaco:

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the trailer, though, is that Shenmue 3's visuals are also faithful to what fans have come to expect from its predecessors. Shenmue has always had a bit of a cartoon vibe to it, and that's returned here, despite graphics being much better than what they were in 1999 and 2001. The character designs are also slightly exaggerated, which gives them each some defining traits and helps make the newer characters memorable from the outset, a nice touch for a game that's graphics certainly won't set the world ablaze in 2019.

Overall, the gameplay trailer is exactly what we would've expected from a modern Shenmue title. That's surely going to be divisive for fans interested in the game, though. The graphics aren't very flashy, and the combat looks as rigid as it was nearly two decades ago - that can't be encouraging for those who missed the first two instalments but have heard great things, and it might make Shenmue 3 another cult classic in the best case scenario. Still, Shenmue 3 looks like the kind of game the series' existing followers would've wanted when they backed its crowdfunding campaign, and we're definitely more interested in it now that we've seen it, so it should be an interesting buildup to the game's release in August of this year.
