Phase 4 Already Has The Best Answer For Daredevil & Jessica Jones' Futures

The Netflix Marvel characters have slowly started showing up in the MCU, and an upcoming project in phase 4 already presents the perfect answer for where both Daredevil and Jessica Jones can appear next: She-Hulk. Despite not having a confirmed release date, She-Hulk is expected to release in the fall of 2022. The series will star Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who has the ability to change into a strong, large, Hulk version of herself.

Beginning with Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021, versions of Marvel characters previously confined to the streaming service Netflix began appearing in Marvel Studios productions. To many fans' delight, that film saw the introduction of Matt Murdock/Daredevil as Spider-Man's lawyer, still played by Daredevil's Charlie Cox. Only a week later, the season finale of Hawkeye on Disney+ featured another character from Netflix's Daredevil, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Since then, audiences have been speculating on just how and when the rest of the Netflix Marvel characters will appear (or appear next) in the MCU, including Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter).

The MCU's Phase 4 might just have the perfect solution for both Jessica Jones', and Daredevil's futures in the form of She-Hulk. She-Hulk is one of the three Disney+ MCU shows that will be released at some point in 2022, following both Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel. The show is set to introduce Jennifer Walters, played by Maslany, the cousin of Bruce Banner. So far the MCU Disney+ shows have continued the feature films' tendencies to play with genre, with WandaVision being a Marvel sitcom, Moon Knight delving into Egyptian mythology, or Ms. Marvel being a teen high-school comedy to name a few. She-Hulk has been described by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige as a legal comedy-drama, consisting of ten thirty-minute episodes. So what is it that makes this show the perfect answer for these two Marvel Netflix characters?

Both Jennifer Walters And Matt Murdock Are New York City Lawyers

She-Hulk's Jennifer Walters is a lawyer who, in the MCU, is based in New York City. Similarly, in Netflix's Daredevil will know, Matt Murdock is also a lawyer operating out of Hell's Kitchen in New York. This lawyer connection alone gives She-Hulk good enough reason to feature the next appearance of the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, with two lawyers crossing paths in New York being a believable prospect. However, to add even more support to the phase 4 MCU show featuring Daredevil, Jennifer Walters is a lawyer who specializes in legal cases involving superhumans. With Murdock being a lawyer, as well as secretly masquerading as Daredevil, it is highly likely two attorneys dabbling in either side of superheroic activity will cross paths. Whether Walters interacts with the Daredevil or Matt Murdock side of the character remains to be seen, however. Although, with Matt Murdock appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, specifically as a lawyer for Peter Parker/Spider-Man, it is highly likely Matt, if not his alter-ego, will be involved. Given Walter's specialization in superhuman cases and Murdock's obvious MCU experience with handling such a case, the relationship between the two could be mutually beneficial, with Walters potentially needing help from a lawyer who has already worked superhuman cases.

Jessica Jones' PI Work Is Perfect For Helping Out A Superhuman Lawyer

Netflix's Jessica Jones portrayed the titular hero as having a main occupation outside of her street-level hero work, as a private investigator at her own firm, Alias Investigations. From the outset of episode 1 of Jessica Jones, Jessica is shown to be an effective PI, often using her superhuman abilities to her advantage when investigating for her clients. PI's, including Jessica Jones, are often hired by attorneys to assist in cases, who has a working relationship with Jeri Hogarth (Carrie Ann Moss), and this could very easily bring Jessica Jones and Jennifer Walters together. Walters' specialization in superhuman cases only goes to support this, with the lawyer potentially needing a powered individual of her own to investigate superhuman elements of the cases. Jennifer may have trouble with certain aspects of these cases, leaving regular human PIs useless, which could perfectly set up Jessica's introduction to the main MCU. As Jessica Jones is a professional PI, it would only make sense for Jennifer to hire her as opposed to using her own She-Hulk abilities to investigate and potentially being discovered. Jessica Jones working for Walters in any capacity is the perfect answer for Jessica's future, not only by tying the two characters' stories together effectively through their work but by allowing a fan-favorite Netflix character to make her first appearance in the MCU in a way that makes sense for both Jessica Jones and She-Hulk's characters.

Jessica And Daredevil's Established Netflix History

While it hasn't been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios that the Netflix shows are canon within the wider MCU, there have been hints that this may be the case. Vincent D'onofrio for example, who reprised his role as Kingpin from Daredevil in Hawkeye, believes his character to be the same version, carrying over from Netflix. Again, this doesn't officially confirm that fact as D'onofrio is simply stating what he believes, but if this were to be the case, it means both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have an established history together. The Marvel Netflix shows were made with their own team-up show in mind, culminating in The Defenders. In that show, Jessica and Matt were given a lot of screen time together, having met through Matt representing Jessica legally. Once Jessica Jones figured out Matt Murdock's Daredevil secret, the two teamed up to form the Defenders alongside Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

In the case of She-Hulk, if Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters were indeed to work together and a PI was needed, it would make sense for Matt to suggest one he already knows and trusts. Also, if everyone's special abilities became known to one another, as is commonplace for the MCU heroes, Matt would likely suggest Jessica based on her abilities, again tying into the superhuman aspects of Walters' usual cases. With the Netflix shows canonicity still up for debate, She-Hulk represents the perfect opportunity to bring these characters together and undeniably tie Daredevil and Jessica Jones to the main MCU timeline.

With Jessica Jones and Daredevil being the first two characters of Netflix's branch of the MCU, it makes sense that speculation would begin about when they would appear next. Following some cameo appearances at the end of 2021, and the Marvel Netflix shows moving over to Disney+ in 2022, it is only natural for audiences to wonder just what this means for the futures of those characters in regards to their first, or continued, appearances in the MCU going into phase 4 and beyond. From theories that Vincent D'onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, will make his next appearance in Echo or the next Spider-Man trilogy, or that Iron Fist will appear in the Shang-Chi sequel, speculation has run rampant. With Jessica Jones and Daredevil specifically, though, there is one project in phase 4 of the MCU that would be the perfect answer to the question of their uncertain future. With She-Hulk slated to release in the last half of 2022, it remains the ideal candidate for the reintroduction of the Devil of Hell's Kitchen and Alias Investigator Jessica Jones.
