One of the greatest things about She-Hulk is that, despite the familial bonds tying her to the Incredible Hulk, Jennifer Walters is very much her own character with her own unique quirks. This extends to her powers which, while similar to the Hulk’s, are actually quite different and give Jennifer options that Bruce Banner usually doesn’t have.

Like any Marvel character, however, Jennifer’s ability to transform into the She-Hulk has gone through some changes over the years. With a new She-Hulk TV series about to debut on Disney+, let’s take some time to examine how the She-Hulk transformation is different for Jennifer Walters.

Like Bruce Banner, Jennifer Walter’s ability to transform into a Hulk comes from the gamma radiation in her blood. Unlike her cousin, however, Jennifer didn’t receive this gamma radiation from a bomb or government experiment – instead she got a blood transfusion of her cousin’s unique gamma-irradiated blood that he gave her after she was shot by some mobsters.

In the Marvel Universe, gamma radiation doesn’t just give you powers – it actually gives you powers based on your mental state and self-perception. In Bruce Banner’s case, the gamma connected with the multiple personalities already in Banner’s psyche and allowed him to transform into several different Hulk forms, including a crafty grey version, a savage green version, and even an articulate “Smart Hulk” who seemed to represent Banner’s personal ideal sense of self.

Jennifer Walters, however, did not have multiple personalities or any real mental disorders. Instead, she was a mousy, studious lawyer who secretly wanted to be an uninhibited, glamorous “party girl.” Thus, over time, the gamma in her blood transformed into her physical and mental ideal – a seven- foot-tall green giantess with a physique that was more sexy than monstrous. And since Jennifer did not usually connect her Hulk to anger (although anger did trigger some of her early transformations), she was able to consciously control her transformation from Jennifer to She-Hulk and back again.

Notably, Jennifer didn’t seem to feel any pain when she transformed, even though she was gaining (or losing) several hundred pounds of superhuman muscle mass. This was in contrast to Banner’s Hulk transformations which often seemed unbelievably painful (one novel described it as giving birth with every cell in your body). In Jennifer’s case, however, transforming was a pleasurable experience (in one Hulk cartoon, Jennifer actually claimed that transforming felt like someone was “lighting my fire”). Apparently, the gamma altered her pain receptors by translating pain into pleasure.

She-Hulk’s body is also usually more human-like in appearance than other Hulks. Although she is a seven-foot-tall “Jade Giantess,” proportionately, she still looks like a normal athletic, woman. This is because her transformation causes her bones and muscles to condense during her transformations, packing a tremendous amount of gamma-powered muscle in a small space. The process is not unlike how Ant-Man can condense his density when he shrinks, and very different from the Incredible Hulk’s transformation, which causes his muscles to swell to ridiculous proportions.

Smart Hulk, She-Hulk,and Angry Hulk

This more efficient transformation may also be why Jennifer retains such fine motor control even as She-Hulk. The Hulk’s hands are brutish and designed for smashing. Jennifer, however, has no problem writing with pens, typing on a keyboard, or even piloting ships in her She-Hulk form, showing she instinctively knows how much power to exert for delicate tasks. Banner’s Hulk forms have occasionally shown a similar ability, but even then, the Hulk has admitted he has to treat everything like an egg in order to keep himself from accidentally destroying everything.

In recent years, however, Jennifer has learned that if she works out in her normal human form, her She-Hulk form gains more muscle, making her resemble a female bodybuilder. Her strength also increases dramatically, showing that she could become stronger not simply through the adrenaline burst that empowers all Hulks during moments of fear or anger, but simply by working out. This differs from Banner since working out would only heighten his pulse and trigger his transformation into the Hulk.

Jennifer’s most dramatic transformation, however, is in her mind. Although many people believe Jennifer keeps her intelligence and sense of self when she became the She-Hulk, the truth is somewhat more complex. As She-Hulk, Jennifer was initially much more uninhibited and aggressive. She flirted openly with men (something she didn’t normally do in her human form) and enjoyed partying, one-night stands, and drinking. At one point, she realized to her embarrassment that she was also more promiscuous in her She-Hulk form and had become addicted to the good feelings that came from transforming into She-Hulk. This caused her to force herself to spend more time as a regular human.

Even so, throughout most of her superhero career, She-Hulk has been able to conduct herself professionally in society – even representing her clients in her She-Hulk form and dressing in custom-made business suits. However, this has changed recently. Although Jennifer didn’t start out with mental issues, some of her experiences as She-Hulk did manage to affect her mind, which altered some of her transformations. Shortly after recovering from a coma, Jennifer began transforming into a more massive, grey-skinned version of her She-Hulk form that was more violent and less intelligent. Eventually, Jennifer was able to get over her issues and reverted back to normal.

However, following an infusion of more gamma radiation, Jennifer has started transforming into a more muscular version of her green She-Hulk form and now just goes by “Hulk.” Her speech patterns are more brutish in this form and she frequently speaks in the third person. Despite how this looks, Jennifer actually isn’t less intelligent in this transformed state – she just finds words harder to use (similar, possibly, to a stroke victim). She can also still control her human-to-Hulk transformations, showing there are still some similarities in how this new She-Hulk compares to her “classic” version.
