Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for She-Hulk episode 3!

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law just broke the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, again, after seemingly referencing Doctor Strange's Spider-Man: No Way Home spell. Since the MCU is built on the premise of every movie and show taking place in a single universe, the continuity of the franchise has continued to gain notoriety. For as much as Marvel Studios wants audiences to think everything is carefully planned out, the canon breaks have continued to mount over the year. Phase 4's movies and shows are not exempt from breaking the MCU timeline, even though some are easily avoidable. It becomes even more difficult as Marvel's output increases and the order of significant events changes.

As Phase 4 continued to unfold, She-Hulk's place in the MCU timeline became a considerable debate. Bruce Banner's human form in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings came as the result of Marvel having to retcon Smart Hulk's story to allow for Jennifer Walters' origin. She-Hulk seemingly fits into the MCU timeline as taking place in the summer of 2024, several months after Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi. The show has already complicated that and seemingly broke the timeline thanks to footage of Abomination and Wong's fight surfacing even after Bruce's arm was healed. It turns out that was not the worst of She-Hulk's timeline breaks.

A rather shocking moment comes in She-Hulk episode 3 when Wong and She-Hulk meet to discuss Abomination's fight. As Wong runs through options for what they could do after the Abomination fight footage leaks, he appears to reference Spider-Man: No Way Home's spell that made everyone forget about Peter Parker. Wong says that he will not erase everyone's memories again. Spider-Man: No Way Home made it seem as though Wong was completely against anyone doing the spell, and while he was not involved in performing the spell to erase all memories of Peter Parker, it only makes sense that this is the event She-Hulk's line refers to. The issue with this is that She-Hulk is meant to take place months before Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is firmly set in late 2024. Alas, Marvel has created another major MCU timeline issue.

Spider-Man's Spell Is The MCU's Biggest Continuity Problem

Spider-Man No Way Home Ending Spell Doctor Strange SR

If it was not immediately clear when it happened, Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending spell has become a huge problem for the MCU canon and its continuity. Doctor Strange's Spider-Man spell immediately created questions about how it worked, ranging from how people's lives could be different without knowing Peter Parker to the effects it had on Spider-Man's heroic journey. It has since been teased that Zendaya's MJ could still remember Peter Parker, and so too could others potentially. Sony even used the multiverse break the spell helped reverse to send Michael Keaton's Vulture to Morbius' universe. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' referenced the multiverse and Spider-Man, but even he seemingly does not remember casting a memory-wiping spell.

Even if the timing of She-Hulk's Spider-Man reference did work with the MCU timeline, Wong's knowledge of the spell does not align with what Marvel has explained. It suggests that not even Marvel fully understands the rules of Spider-Man: No Way Home's multiverse spell, which is a bit concerning considering Tom Holland is expected to return for several more MCU movies. Barring the unforeseen move of Marvel completely reversing Doctor Strange's spell, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law could continue to make Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending even more confusing.
