She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Tatiana Maslany teases some of the new MCU superhumans in the show. Maslany, former star of Canadian sci-fi series Orphan Black, stars as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk, a single attorney in her 30s who becomes a 6’7” superhuman hulk after a blood transfusion. She stars alongside Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk, as well as Tim Roth and The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil. She-Hulk will premiere on Disney+ later this summer.

A lot of the show's early attention has not been positive. When the She-Hulk trailer released, some viewers were unimpressed with the CGI for its main character; especially when compared with the CGI for Ruffalo’s Hulk, many found She-Hulk’s special effects to be unconvincing. While some VFX artists have pushed back on the She-Hulk trailer effects criticism, many viewers will still be waiting for the full series to see whether the special effects and other aspects of the show live up to the high precedent that Marvel has set for themselves in recent years.

Now, Maslany gives further details on She-Hulk, regarding some of its new characters, in an interview with Empire. Specifically, she speaks about the experience of her character at her law firm, which specializes in superhuman law. While sometimes tough for Jennifer to deal with, Maslany notes that her cases are opportunities to introduce some “really fun characters.” Check out the full statement from Maslany:

She’s in a career that’s male-dominated and incredibly vicious and hierarchical. When she’s heading this superhuman firm, that’s where we get some really fun characters that she’s either defending or in opposition of. It’s like this really absurd take on a legal show.

An “absurd take on a legal show” may not initially seem of a piece with the other MCU Disney+ shows, but this work with superhuman defendants and plaintiffs has great comedic potential. Furthermore, Maslany’s comment about the male-dominated nature of superhuman law, mimicking real-life struggles in the industry, suggests She-Hulk could explore themes relating to Jennifer's experience as a female superhero and superhuman attorney.

Despite the initial criticism of She-Hulk’s CGI, it seems the show will have the opportunity to recover from some of the initial negative press. Between bringing back familiar characters including Ruffalo’s Hulk and Benedict Wong’s Wong and introducing new characters and actors to the MCU, She-Hulk will have the opportunity to create new relationship dynamics while still drawing in fans that have followed a lot of the MCU films and TV shows. The fun new characters teased to appear at the superhuman law firm hint that She-Hulk will have multiple opportunities to hook audiences. Viewers will find out more about these characters when She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on Disney+ on August 17, 2022.
