She-Hulk Director Discusses The Involved Process Of Landing An MCU Job

She-Hulk director Kat Coiro talks about the creative process that led to her landing the massive MCU gig. Following the end of Marvel Studios' historical Infinity Saga, Phase 4 has been setting up the next generation of heroes in the MCU. While the movies have introduced new characters like Shang-Chi, the Eternals, and Yelena Belova, Disney+ is also helping extend the MCU as they have been rolling out original shows tied to the cinematic universe. Thanks to the digital service, the MCU has been able to help flesh out some previously established characters while also opening the door for newer faces. One of the upcoming Marvel Studios originals debuting later this year is another Hulk family member with Tatiana Maslany bringing Jennifer Walters, a.k.a. She-Hulk, to life.

While not a lot has been revealed about She-Hulk, the series will follow Jennifer, Bruce Banner's cousin, who is a lawyer dealing with superhuman cases. Just like Bruce, Jennifer is able to turn into a green, powerful Hulk-creature. Mark Ruffalo, who has portrayed Hulk for a decade, will also star in the She-Hulk series alongside Tim Roth's Abomination, who re-emerged earlier in Phase 4 during Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Despite no premiere date being set yet for She-Hulk season 1, the series is expected to arrive in the middle of the year.

Like most Marvel Studios projects, a lot went into making She-Hulk, and for the show's main director Coiro, it was a dream gig. In a new interview with Collider, Coiro went into depth about how she landed the job. It turns out that prior to joining the MCU, Coiro was already a massive fan of the She-Hulk character so much so that she pitched herself hard to the Marvel executives to get to be involved with the series. Praising Marvel for being a collaborative environment, Coiro said the following about her She-Hulk journey:

"I’m a huge fan of the MCU, and I was actually a giant fan of the She-Hulk comics, so when I heard they were making it, I went full court press and really sold myself as the person to bring this story to life. It was a huge and involved process. Marvel is one of the most collaborative environments in the world. Even though he’s producing so many things, Kevin [Feige], and Lou [D’Esposito] and Victoria [Alonso] and Brad [Winderbaum], have such a hand in everything. The process was really about getting on the same page and making sure that we were like-minded. It’s never about anybody’s ego. It’s about bringing these stories to life. It was a long process, but those processes to get a job become very easy when you’re really passionate about the material, which I was in the case of that one."

While it's definitely not a mandate for a director or writer to already know the source material, it's always a bonus when they are a fan. For starters, it probably makes the collaborative process easier, which was clearly the case for Coiro on She-Hulk. Another bonus with having someone who is passionate about the mythology is the potential inclusion of neat Easter eggs to famous She-Hulk stories, which is likely something Coiro and lead writer Jessica Gao will do throughout the season. Based on what Coiro shared, it sounded like Marvel Studios made this a positive and rewarding experience, which should always be the case when adapting iconic heroes like She-Hulk.

Since Moon Knight is the next Disney+ series to arrive, She-Hulk fans may have to, at the very least, wait till the middle of May for a first proper trailer. While it will be quite some time, it looks like the wait will be worth it. Not only does the MCU get to introduce another iconic heroine into the franchise, but She-Hulk will also allow Bruce to have some of his personal life explored through his relationship with Jennifer. Given how much secrecy has surrounded She-Hulk, it will be exciting to see what the series has to offer when it arrives later this year on Disney+.
