Marvel's VFX artist addresses comparisons between the CGI work on Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk on She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and Thanos. The eighth MCU series on Disney+ introduced fans to Jen Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner who becomes another Hulk after an accident. Considering Jen's constant back-and-forth between her human and green creature forms, the show's VFX work was heavily dissected. Her final look as She-Hulk was widely criticized, especially considering how its quality significantly differs from how Thanos appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking with Befores and Afters, Digital Domain visual effects supervisor Jan Philip Cramer, who worked on She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, addresses the matter. For context, he worked with production visual effects supervisors Janelle Croshaw Ralla, Shannon Justison, and Dadi Einarsson on the Disney+ show, which was the same team he had for Thanos, making him the perfect person to answer this query. Read Cramer's full quote below:

It’s also important to remember that Thanos was a bald, angry man, and Tatiana is a young, bubbly actress with a huge range of emotions, and she portrays them very vividly on her face. It turns out that the difficulty was way higher than what we created for Thanos, because Thanos didn’t need to show many emotions. He just looked great when he was looking stoically at the camera or was angry. But now with She-Hulk, we had to show a full range of emotions and facial expressions, including happy, drunk and giggling, all while talking, and the system has to still maintain and capture this.

MCU Can Still Fix She-Hulk's CGI Like With Thanos

She-Hulk Incredible Hulk Recreation

Just recently, Marvel Studios was in hot water after MCU VFX artists came out to criticize the poor working conditions when tackling one of their projects. Apparently, the franchise is notorious for changing scenes, which forces them to work overtime to finish their deliverables within the previously agreed schedule. And because they are one of the biggest clients in the industry, they don't have any choice but to give in to their demands. While fans have been all excited about all the remaining projects in the Multiverse Saga, the VFX industry is reportedly depressed about it, which goes to show how burned out the artists are.

The good news is Marvel Studios still has time to fix She-Hulk's CGI work. For context, the first time Thanos debuted in The Avengers' post-credits scene, he, too, had a really rough look. It took the franchise a few cameos across several years to perfect the design of the purple Titan. It's also worth noting that Marvel was understandably more inclined to ensure that Thanos looked fantastic at the end of Infinity Saga, because he was such an important character in an already massive narrative. Much of the budget of Avengers: Infinity War, in particular, may have been devoted to his appearance because of this.

It's uncertain where She-Hulk will pop up next after She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Considering what's known about the Multiverse Saga at this point, it's safe to say that she will factor in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. But she may also appear in Daredevil: Born Again considering her love affair with Matt Murdock. Perhaps she could also be in the rumored World War Hulk project.
