Zachary Levi thinks Shazam would beat Thor in a fight. One of several actors to appear in both Marvel and DC film adaptations, Levi portrayed Shazam in the hit 2019 movie. As the superhero alter-ego of teenaged Billy Baston, Levi was one of many reasons why Shazam was so well-received by audiences and critics. Imbued with plenty of heart and humor, the feature stood out when compared to some of the darker narratives that have come out of DC’s Extended Universe. Levi has also appeared in two Thor films, sharing the minor role of Fandral with Josh Dallas. But in recent comments, Levi seems to admit his preference for the DC side of the ledger.

Of course, the question of how two comic book creations might fare in a matchup is a common one. That was the draw all the way back in 1976 when Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Battle of the Century was jointly created by DC and Marvel. Other largely non-canon crossovers followed, including a face off between Batman and The Hulk and a team-up of The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans. The central question that these exceptional comic book events seek to answer boils down to: “Who is better?”

At least as Zachary Levi sees it, however, it’s not much of a question at all. During a livestream on his Instagram page, Levi was asked who he thought would emerge victorious in a battle between Shazam and Thor. The star of Chuck apparently didn’t need time to weigh the pros and cons of each iconic character. “Shazam would win,” he replied. “That seems like a rhetorical question.”

The particular matchup that Levi was asked about has proved especially popular, with an evil version of Shazam fighting off against DC’s version of Thor in the past. A fight on the big screen, bolstered by special effects and CGI, would likely unfold differently. It’s worth recalling that in their respective film appearances, Thor has super strength and exceptional durability. Shazam, however, is essentially invulnerable. He can only experience pain at the hands of a being with powers identical to his own.

Considering Thor famously lost an eye, it’s safe to say the two are not equal in their abilities. Still, perhaps the real joy of seeing the two heroes interact would be derived from the fact that Shazam is a 15 year-old in an adult’s body. Thor, in his most recent MCU outings, has occasionally tapped into a more playful side as well. It might be the case that the two would get along reasonably well if, in several years, movie crossovers between Marvel and DC ever happened.
