Asher Angel celebrates his first day on the set of Shazam! by sharing a behind-the-scenes snap teasing his role in the film. Set to play Billy Batson, the young kid behind Zachary Levi's titular superhero in DC Films' next project on their docket, the Disney star has been giving fans exclusive looks on his prep process to take on his newest gig. The origins film helmed by Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg and executive produced by Dwayne Johnson (whose Black Adam was once reported to also debut in the flick) will tackle the duality of the aforementioned character.
Sandberg has assembled a slew of supporting characters to back up Levi and Angel. On top of Mark Strong playing the main protagonist, Doctor Sivana, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen and Jovan Armand are all on board as Billy’s friends. Meanwhile, The Walking Dead alum Cooper Andrews and Marta Milans are tapped as Billy's foster parents and Ron Cephas Jones is set to play the Wizard. Details on the film's plot are still thin on the surface, but it's expected to have a lighter tone and enough humor bits to it. Officially entering principal photography late last month, we presume we'll get more narrative points moving forward.
Taking to his official Twitter account, the young actor shared a photo of his designated set chair labeled Billy Batson and captioned it with "Day 1," obviously pertaining to his first official day on set. Unfortunately there's was no snap of Angel, nonetheless, fans were thrilled with his upload as it's proof that despite all the setbacks and story revisions, Shazam! is finally happening. Check it out below:
Prior to Angel's upload, Sandberg surprised members of a Reddit forum with an exclusive first look of the Sivana Industries logo. With how active people involved in the film are, it's a wonder if they will continue to drop tiny teases on social media as filming goes along or they'll eventually tone it down once they really get into principal photography. That said, keeping people engaged online and even hyped up with random check-ins from the cast and crew will be a good way to keep the film in the consciousness of the public.
With filming already on its way, we presume that it won't be long before we get a look at Angel's young Billy and maybe even Levi donning the iconic red and gold suit. Whether that would be in a traditional press release or a casual social media drop just to say that they're doing a more relaxed approach in promoting Shazam! remains to be seen. However it pans out, Warner Bros. would have to tread carefully with how they'll handle PR for their next films considering all the controversy that plagued Justice League.
