A new trailer for Shazam! is imminent, according to one of the film's producers. When Warner Bros. and DC Films announced their original slate of DCEU films, one of the more surprising characters included in the lineup was Shazam. Teenager Billy Batson has the ability to become a superhero any time he shouts the magic word, and despite years of silence on the project, the addition of director David F. Sandberg quickly sent Shazam! through the deeper stages of development.
The highly coveted role of Shazam went to Zachary Levi, and the marketing for Shazam! has shown him channeling his child-like personality to bring the hero to life. The first trailer confirmed what Sandberg and others involved with the film had been saying, that the movie's tone is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum from the seriousness of earlier DC films. The lighthearted tone has been produced in all the footage shown, which has been made easier by the limited amount of footage shown. There's only been one official trailer so far, and a new one is on the way.
Screen Rant had the opportunity to preview 20 minutes of Shazam! footage last week, and speak to Sandberg and producer Peter Safran. During the roundtable interview, the lack of a second trailer was addressed, with Safran promising that another one is not too far away.
We haven't seen a trailer from this film since Comic-Con last year. I'm curious, what's been the kind of strategy with marketing?
Sandberg: I think it's about to wrap up.
Safran: You saw we had the new TV spot, obviously, the AFC/NFC game. And a lot more TV spots are coming, obviously, and I wouldn't be surprised if there [were] some more long-form materials coming soon. But, without promising a date... imminent.
The wait for a second trailer has been long, especially considering Levi previously teased that a new trailer was coming shortly after the new year. If that was indeed the plan at one point, it would appear that WB altered the marketing strategy for Shazam! for unknown reasons. There was even a description of the trailer footage and several reports of specific dates that the trailer would arrive. Unfortunately, none of this has come to pass so far. WB has made the wait a bit more bearable through the recent release of an extended TV spot though.
Considering all the attention Shazam!'s second trailer has received, many are even more curious to see what it does contain, and even what it may not. Reports have once again surfaced that a well-known DC hero will make a cameo in the movie in some capacity, but it still remains unclear how this could be. Either way, with less than two months to go before Shazam! hits theaters, a second trailer at this point will likely be the final one too.
