The new Shazam! trailer - which is expected to arrive later this month - contains a Superman homage, according to a reported description. Even as Aquaman continues to dominate the global box office, DCEU fans have begun turning their attention to the next installment in DC's shared universe. The film in question, Shazam!, introduces Zachary Levi's namesake and is the first DCEU movie that went into production after Zack Snyder stepped away from the franchise in 2017. It's also the sole DCEU film scheduled to arrive in 2019, and will hit the scene a mere four months after Aquaman opened in theaters.
Naturally, people are curious to find out where Shazam! will take the franchise, now that Aquaman has served as a bridge between the DCEU under Snyder's watch and its future with producer Walter Hamada (The Conjuring) serving as the president of DC Films. Fittingly enough, Hamada has already worked with Aquaman director James Wan and Shazam! helmsman David F. Sandberg in the past. The latter's horror films Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation were both produced by Hamada and struck a distinctly darker tone than the light-hearted comedy of the Shazam! teaser trailer released at last year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Warner Bros.' official Shazam! trailer won't be all that darker by comparison, according to a description reported by SuperBroMovies. The trailer allegedly begins with protagonist Billy Batson (Asher Angel) having dinner with his foster family, where it's revealed a new costumed hero has appeared in Philadelphia. From there, the trailer expands on the teaser by introducing more of Billy's foster siblings - namely, Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman) and Pedro Peña (Jovan Armand) - and revealing more of what happens after Billy is granted his super-abilities by The Wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Specifically, the trailer shows Billy - now transformed into Shazam - realizing he can indeed fly by channeling his inner-Superman.
Speaking of the Man of Steel: SBM's description claims the trailer's second half features a mid-air fight between Shazam and Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) that's intercut with a child playing with their Superman and Batman action figures, all while humming John Williams' classic Superman: The Movie theme. The Superman homage is all the more interesting, in light of reports that Shazam! originally called for a cameo by Henry Cavill's Man of Steel, before it was scrapped. Even without an appearance by Superman in the flesh, it stands to reason that the character's presence will loom large over Shazam! and, especially, its young leads. These trailer details confirm as much to be true, assuming they are in fact accurate.
The new Shazam! trailer will further follow the teaser's lead and include plenty of humor from the film, according to this rundown. Among other things, it shows Shazam and Billy's foster brother Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) trying to find a place for their lair by visiting a real estate office, and ends with a direct homage to the giant piano dancing scene from Tom Hanks' comedy Big (which has already been cited as one of the film's influences). The trailer sounds just as entertaining as the original teaser and we're looking forward to watching it ourselves, later this month.
