A new report suggests that actor John Glover will be playing a role in the upcoming Shazam! movie. Precisely what that role is has yet to be confirmed. It is suspected, however, that the beloved character actor will be playing one of the movie's mystery villains.
Perhaps most famous for playing the role of Lex Luthor's father Lionel Luthor during the first seven seasons of Smallville, Glover has a long and distinguished career on stage and screen. DC Comics fans may also recognize him as the voice of The Riddler in Batman: The Animated Series or from his role as Dr. Jason Woodrue in the movie Batman and Robin. Glover frequently plays villainous roles, and is well-known for his creepy characterizations. In more recent years, Glover has lent his voice to numerous audio book productions, including several of Stephen King's novels.
Revenge of the Fans reported the news of Glover's casting in Shazam!, which was provided to them by an anonymous source. While Glover and his representatives have yet to confirm or deny the reports, the rumor is considered to be a reliable one. The same source reportedly broke similar news regarding the film in the past and Glover's casting would fit to the pattern displayed by director David F. Sandberg's previous decisions, which stemmed from his desire to plant a number of DC Comics related Easter eggs in the film.
It's worth noting that Glover is far from the only actor with a history with DC Comics who has been cast in Shazam! Mark Strong, who will be playing the role of mad scientist Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, played the role of Sinestro in the 2011 Green Lantern movie. Actors Adam Brody and D.J. Cotrona, who were cast to play The Flash and Superman in George Miller’s cancelled Justice League movie also, have roles in the film, but who they are playing has not been confirmed. It is suspected, however, that they will be playing adult incarnations of the other children making up the Shazam Family.
With or without Glover, Shazam! is shaping up to be one of the biggest films of 2019. The buzz around the film to date has been almost universally positive and it is easily one of the most anticipated films of the year. With the more light-hearted Aquaman movie proving a surprise smash hit on a global level, audiences are anxious to see if the clearly comedic Shazam! movie will continue the good fortunes of DC Comics on the silver screen. Based on all the early indicators, it seems a safe bet that Shazam! will have the same magic touch.
