Warner Bros. has set a release date for DC's Shazam! on Blu-ray and revealed the special features that'll be included. This year's addition to the DC Extended Universe, Shazam! was a critical and commercial success that kept the franchise's winning streak going, following Aquaman's billion dollar run at the box office last winter. Starring Asher Angel as teenager Billy Batson and Zachary Levi as the superhero he can magically transform into, the film was widely celebrated for being a great blend of action, comedy, and emotionally rich familial drama.
Thanks to its $100 million budget (a relatively modest sum for a modern tentpole), Shazam! was quick to turn a profit at the box office, following its release in early April. And while WB has yet to announce a release date for Shazam! 2, the sequel is already being written by the first movie's co-writer, Henry Gayden, with director David F. Sandberg all but confirmed to return at the helm. In the meantime, those in the mood to revisit the adventures of Billy and his foster siblings turned superfamily will be able to when Shazam! makes its way onto home media this July.
WB Home Entertainment has announced that Shazam! will become available on Digital in about five weeks on Tuesday, July 2, before it releases on Blu-ray and other home video formats two weeks later on July 16. The Blu-ray special features will include a gag reel and deleted scenes, as well as an exclusive Shazam! motion comic and featurettes titled "The Magical World of Shazam", 'Super Fun Zac", Carnival Scene Study, Shazamily Values", and "Shazamily Values".
Sandberg has been pretty open about how much be enjoyed bringing Shazam! and his world to life on the big screen, and has already revealed some behind the scenes details through his social media accounts. One imagines the Blu-ray special features will be equally informative and enjoyable for the same reasons, especially when it comes to the featurette about the movie's third act carnival sequence. And as always, it should be interesting to see what footage was shot but didn't make it into the film's theatrical cut, and why. No doubt, some of the deleted scenes will be self-explanatory, but there's always a chance some of the abandoned clips will include story material that Sandberg wanted to save for the sequel.
Speaking of which: Shazam!'s mid-credits scene clearly set the stage for the comic book villain Mister Mind to join forces with Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) in the followup. The film's Bu-ray features probably won't touch on that plot thread much (if at all), but "The Magical World of Shazam" featurette may offer some details about the series' mythology that wind up coming back into play in the sequel. As for when Shazam! 2 could arrive: WB currently has two DCEU movies scheduled to open every year from 2020-2022 (following Super Pet's recent delay), but that could change, depending on how quickly the next Shazam! adventure comes together.
