Shazam got a suit upgrade for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, but why is his suit black and does it connect to Black Adam? The original Shazam! introduced a more lighthearted superhero to the DC Universe and the smaller movie proved to be a good hit for Warner Bros. The result was Shazam: Fury of the Gods getting announced and receiving an increased budget to heighten the action and cosmetics of a major superhero blockbuster film. This was evident upon the first look at the sequel where Zachary Levi's Shazam was shown wearing a much better suit than in the first movie. But, it still retained his usual color design.

The red Shazam suit with a gold lightning bolt in the center and white cape is once again prominently featured in Shazam: Fury of the Gods' latest trailer. Curiously, the footage seems to introduce a new look for the teenage hero in an adult body. By the end of the Shazam 2 trailer when the titular hero is fighting a giant dragon, he appears to be wearing a black Shazam suit. It's a noticeable departure from his traditional look and instead looks more like Black Adam's suit. The colors match up with Dwayne Johnson's DC anti-hero, while even some of the texture of Shazam's black suit looks the same.

Shazam’s Black Suit Is Caused By Damage In Fury of the Gods

Shazam Fury of the Gods Trailer Black Suit Zachary Levi

The look at a nearly full black Shazam suit in Shazam: Fury of the Gods appears to be the culmination of the damage he takes in the movie. Earlier shots in the trailer show Zachary Levi in his upgraded red Shazam suit but with patches of black on it. It is also important to note that Shazam's black suit is not fully devoid of color, as some of the red still appears to be on his legs and lower torso in other shots. That further illustrates that the black costume is not a permanent change but instead something that gradually increases throughout the film.

It would appear that Shazam's black suit is the result of his battles with the Daughters of Atlas in Shazam: Fury of the Gods. The color change could be due to the effect that their magic has on him or even burn marks from the dragon. Shazam: Fury of the Gods' trailer teases the vast abilities of the Daughters of Atlas and that they can use magic to take away the Shazam family members' powers. It is possible the powerful staff that they use might not be as effective on Shazam as long as his power is shared. But, it is not a sign that Shazam is now Black Adam.

Will Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Appear In Shazam 2?

Black Adam DCEU Origin Shazam Backstory Retcon

Not only is Shazam's black suit in Shazam: Fury of the Gods not connected to Black Adam, but Dwayne Johnson is not expected to be part of the movie in any capacity. Despite Black Adam and Shazam holding some DCU connections between them, a crossover of this magnitude was never part of the plans. The Rock had very different plans for Black Adam, like fighting Superman, as opposed to being part of a Shazam crossover. As a result, Dwayne Johnson reportedly turned down a Shazam 2 cameo.

Instead of Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam appearing in Shazam: Fury of the Gods, his DC character is now left without a future. Black Adam's poor box office performance and James Gunn's ideas for the DCU's future resulted in a decision not to bring The Rock's character back. A different decision on the future could have resulted in a last-second Black Adam cameo in Shazam: Fury of the Gods happening to save Johnson's future, but that still will not fit with DC's future. But, that does not mean that Shazam is becoming Black Adam with a new matching suit before a potential reboot.
