Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg discusses the possibility of a DCEU crossover with Black Adam at some point in the future. With the remaining months of 2022 set to be huge for the DCEU, audiences are gearing up for the releases of both the hotly anticipated sequel to 2019's Shazam! and Dwayne Johnson's exciting DC debut in Black AdamShazam! Fury of the Gods will see Sandberg at the helm once again, while Black Adam finds Jaume Collet-Serra in the director's seat.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will follow-up on the story of Asher Angel's Billy Batson, who has the ability to transform into the super-powered being Shazam by simply shouting the word. Zachary Levi will return as Billy's powerful alter-ego, with the film also set to welcome back the majority of Shazam's standout principal cast. Perhaps most excitingly, however, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will also introduce Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as the daughters of Atlas, Hespera and Kalypso, respectively. With Shazam now set to take on these two powerful villains, many have been wondering whether the hero will eventually cross paths with his comic-book arch nemesis, Black Adam.

While in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 last week, Sandberg was interviewed by Collider, where he discussed the possibility of Shazam and Black Adam going head to head in the DCEU one day. The director's response suggests it will be some time before fans see the two comic book characters clash onscreen. Check out Sandberg's full quote below.

There hasn't really been a conversation about that. I know, at the moment, Black Adam is sort of its thing and Shazam is its thing. Then we'll see where it all goes in the future, but I haven't really been a part of any conversations like that.

Black Adam 4k Trailer Dwyane Johnson in hood

The first Shazam! film certainly had a standalone feel, although it did contain a handful of references to the wider DCEU. With Black Adam set to shift the DCEU's focus onto Johnson's powerful new anti-hero, its not known whether the film will feature any major ties to other DCEU projects. Johnson has stated on a number of occasions that Black Adam will mark a change in the hierarchy of the DCEU, stating more recently that it will "usher in a new era" as his character looks set to lead one of the DC universe's most violent projects to date.

Though Sandberg confirms that a crossover between the two comic-book nemeses may still be a while away, it appears that it most certainly isn't off the table as the DCEU continues to expand and interweave their stories. There is, naturally, always the possibility that Sandberg is purely withholding information for the sake of not spoiling any future plans, though with Black Adam still one of the DCEU's freshest characters, it may even be the case that the character's future will be decided after audiences have got their hands on the character. For now, those keen to see Shazam and Black Adam go head-to-head will have to wait, but in the meantime Shazam! Fury of the Gods looks sure to pack some major punches.
